Pakistan has the new democratic leader she expected – Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – but also a new political situation beyond any expectation. There was stupefaction in Karachi early yesterday as returns poured in showing Mr Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s People’s Party doing almost as well in West Pakistan as Sheikh Mujib’s Awami League in the East. His most generous admirers had given Bhutto no more than 40 seats in the vital Punjab and Sind provinces. Instead, he may get within one or two of 90 – a triumph which has knocked most of the country’s pontificating smaller parties completely off the political map.
The results of independent Pakistan’s first direct elections to a National Assembly are as expected. But they are none the less welcome. Foremost, they have produced a clear winner in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from East Pakistan, and a clear opposition leader in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Neither will have to manoeuvre with lesser parties to maintain his position. The elections took place only because President Yahya Khan fulfilled a promise he made to establish constitutional governmentshortly after taking over the administration of martial law in March 1969.
Sheikh Mujibur’s victory is fitting compensation for East Pakistan’s horrific cyclone disaster. It focused attention on West Pakistan’s neglect for the East, and may well have increased the size of the Sheikh’s victory. But the new Prime Minister is faced with awesome tasks. The first of these will be the drafting of a new Constitution.
Sheikh Mujibur will have to show flexibility in his ideas on the autonomy of the eastern region. Pakistan will need leadership. He will have to make the transition from the regional leadership of the Awami League to being receptive to the needs of both East and West Pakistan. At home he will have to confront the interests of the established social groups, check the cities’ exploitation of agricultural resources, and reorganise the five-year plan. On the international scene, closeness to China will have to be weighed against aid and political contacts with the rest of the world. The cyclone did nothing to improve relations with India. Kashmirremains unsolved. The mountain of problems is formidable. They must be tackled patiently.

হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী এর কন্যা বেগম আখতারি সুলেমান
আখতারি সুলেমান সোহরাওয়ার্দী এর প্রথম পক্ষের স্ত্রীর ঘরের কন্যা । প্রথম স্ত্রীর মৃত্যুর পর সোহরাওয়ার্দী ১৯৪০ সালে পোলিশ বংশীও রাশিয়ান অভিনেত্রী Vera Alexandrovna Tiscenko Calder কে বিয়ে করেছিলেন। তার ঘরে ১ পুত্র সন্তান ছিল। বড় ছেলের নাম রাশেদ (রবার্ট আশবি)। ১৯৫১ সালে তাদের মধ্যে বিচ্ছেদ হয় Alexandrovna ছেলে সহ যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে স্থায়ী হন। রাশেদ তার মায়ের সাথে আমেরিকায় থাকতো। আখতারি তার বাবার সাথেই থাকতেন। আখতারি বিয়ে করেন ভারতিও বিচারপতি শাহ আহমেদ সুলেমান কে। তারা সোহরাওয়ার্দী এর সাথে পাকিস্তানেই থিতু হন জন্মগত উর্দুভাষী আখতারি নিজেদের তেমন বাঙালি মনে করতেন না যদিও সোহরাওয়ার্দী নিজ উদ্যোগে বাংলা শিখেছিলেন। আখতারি পিতার সাথে চিন ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে সফর করেছিলেন। তিনি বিভিন্ন সমাজসেবা মুলক প্রতিষ্ঠানের সাথে জড়িত ছিলেন। আখতারি সব সময়ে রাজনিতি থেকে দূরে ছিলেন। তার পিতার জন্ম মৃত্যু বার্ষিকী পালন বেতিত আওয়ামী লীগের সাথে তাকে দেখা যেত না। ১৯৭১ সালের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধ শুরু হলে তিনি পাকিস্তানের ত্রান কর্তার ভুমিকা পালনের চেষ্টা করেছেন।জুন মাস থেকেই তিনি ইয়াহিয়ার পক্ষ অবলম্বন করে শেখ মুজিব তথা আওয়ামী লীগের কার্যক্রমের নিন্দা করতে শুরু করে ছিলেন। পাকিস্তানের পক্ষে সাফাই গাইতে লন্ডন পর্যন্ত গিয়েছিলেন । ৭১ তার ভুমিকা দেখা যাক
১)১২ জুন -ঢাকা বেতার কেন্দ্র থেকে প্রদত্ত এক ভাষণে মরহুম হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দীর কন্যা বেগক আখতার সোলয়মান গর্ভনর জেনারেল টিক্কা খানের সাধারণ ক্ষমা ঘোষণার সুযোগ গ্রহণ করে নিজ নিজ এলাকায় প্রত্যাবর্তন করার জন্য সকল এম,এন,এ এবং এম পি, এ-এর প্রতি আহান জানান।
২) Rawalpindi, (PPI) ১৫ জুন
Begum Akhtar Sulaiman, daughter of late hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, has said that normalcy has returned in East Pakistan. Things were sure to further improve in near future.
৩) Rawalpindi (PPI) ১৮ জুন
Begum Akhtar Solaiman, Daughter of late Husain Shaheed Suhrawardy said here today that transfer of power at this crucial moment when the country is faced with crisis would not be wise
৪) ১৯ জুন Begum Aktar Sulaiman, daughter of the late Hussain Shaheen Suhrawardy, has no intention to form a new political party.
৫) Karachi (APP) ২৯ জুন
Begum Akhtar Sulaiman, daughter of late Mr. H. S. Suhrawardy, reiterated her stand that the transfer of power should take place in both wings of the country at the same time
৬) Rawalpindi (APP) ৯ জুলাই
Begum Akhtar Sulaiman, daughter of the late Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, has said in London that president Yahya’s consitutional plans will definitely satisfy the people of East Pakistan.
৭) London, Sept. 27 (APP): Begum Akthar Sulaiman has stated here she was ‘delighted’ on offer of amnesty by President Yahya Khan to those who had gone astray in East Pakistan political crisis.
8) Rawalpindi. Nov. 7(PPI) : Begum Akhtr solaiman, daughter office Late Husseyen Shaheed Suhrawardy has said that the, people and valiant forces of- Pakistan will never allow India to capture even smallest portion of East Pakistan in order to install a proper ,government of so called “Bangladesh” there.
