The Bangladesh Home Minister, Mr Kamruzzaman, said that it would be necessary for the India Army to stay here until “complete normality’ was restored. He could not specify how long this period was going to be. Mr Kamruzzaman said, however, that according to reports received by him from the police authorities the general law and order situation was improving. Asked whether the possession of guns by a lot of people would create problems, he said; we will control any such problem.” (Statesman)

-The Mukti Bahini Chief, Col Osmani who arrived here this afternoon, said that he was back in Dacca after nine months” by the grace of God.” He was received at the airport by Group-Captain Khondakar of the Mukti Bahini and Mr Farouq Ahmed Chowdhury. Chief of Protocol of the Bangladesh Government. Col.Osmani, who was presented with a guard of honour by the second battalion of the East Bengal Regiment, said that the Mukti Bahini comprised university students, workers and farmers fighting for the liberation of the much-needed air support. He said that if they people of Bangladesh maintained national cohesion, Bangladesh would emerge as one of the greatest nations of the world. (The Statesman)

-The CPI leader Mr. Bhupesh Gupta, said in the Rajya Sabha today that the Government of India should not commit itself with Pakistan on the prisoners of war issue until and unless Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was released reports PTI. He said that Pakistan had committed “gross violation of international law” by keeping the Sheikh Mujib Head of Bangladesh in detention. Pakistan had no right to address the international community on prisoners of war or Bangladesh until the Sheikh was released he added.

-Four leaders of the Bangladesh Students’ Actions Committee declared today that the armed volunteers under the BSAC would not give up their arms as long as their leader Sheikh Mujib, remained under detention. They emphatically Declared that they would lay down their arms the moment the necessity for them was over. But at the moment “we are still at war, they said. If necessary, “we will attack” West Pakistan to free our leader” they announced. Those who addressed the meeting at the University’s Iqbal Hall are Nur-e-Alam Siddique, Shajahan Siraj, A.S.M Abdur Rab and Abdul Kuddus Makhan. (Statesman)

-President Z.A. Bhutto of Pakistan appointed Mr. Nurul Amin MNA (Mymensingh-8) Vice-President. He formed to cabinet composed entirely of civilians, in which he himself acted as Prime Minister. President Bhutto appointed a commission consisting of Mr. Justice Hamidur Rahman (Chief Justice of the Pakistan Supreme Court) and the Chief Justices of High court of Lahore, Sind and Baluchistan to enquire into “the circumstances leading to the military debacle in East Pakistan and the cease-fire in the west” The enquiry, which was required to be completed within three months, opened on Jan 17, 1972. General Yahya Khan and General Hamid Khan were placed under house arrest following widespread demands that the Yahya Khan should be brought to trial. Mr. Ghulam Ishaq Khan (former Secretary) was appointed governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and followed by Aziz Ahmed, Secretary General Foreign Ministry and Yahya Bakhia Attorney General

সাপ্তাহিক জয়বাংলা পত্রিকায় ‘মুজিবনগর থেকে ঢাকায় একই প্রশ্ন বঙ্গবন্ধু কবে ফিরছেন’ শিরোনামের প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়ঃ মুক্তিবাহিনী ও মিত্রবাহিনীর হাতে এখন প্রায় লক্ষের কাছাকাছি হানাদার সৈন্য এবং নিয়াজী-ফরমান আলীসহ বহু হানাদার অফিসার বন্দী , সুতুরাং এই বন্দীদের ফিরিয়ে নেয়ার জন্য করাচী-লাহোর-পেশোয়ারে যে বিক্ষোভ শুরু হবে। তার পরিণতিতে ভুট্টো বঙ্গবন্ধু ছেড়ে দিতে বাধ্য হবেন, এমন একটি আশা এখন স্কলের মনেই অংকুরিত হয়েছে। 

The Bangladesh cabinet in its first meeting at Dacca took the following decisions:

“Bengali will be the official and State Language of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. It will be introduced at all levels and action will be taken immediately to implement the decision. Government orders, bulletins, gazette notifications, sign boards, road signs and car numbers will henceforth be written in Bengali. Ali corporations, public agencies, having the titles of either ‘Pakistan’ or East Pakistan’ will be immediately renamed as ‘Bangladesh’ agencies or corporations. The State Bank will be renamed as Bangladesh

Bank. War Monument will construct in the city of Dacca in memory of the martyrs of the Liberation War. A War Memorial Trust Fund will also be instituted for the benefit of the families of the martyrs of the Liberation War. Immediate measures will be take to reconstruct the Shadhin Minar. A Committee is being appointed to design the new Shahid Minar. The Bureau of National reconstruction known as ‘Academy for Pakistan Affairs and the Pakistan council will be abolished. A National council for Fine arts and Literature will established which will take over the assets of these institutions. The press Trust will also be abolished. Necessary ordinance will be promulgated to give effect to this decision. The meeting decide that all examination held after March 25th will be deemed as void and fresh examinations with short and condensed syllabi will be held as soon as possible for the facility of all students including those who joined the liberation war.” (DPR-Hand out No-13)
