Fighting continues
The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported Saturday that West Pakistan troops, using heavy artillery, were firing across the Indian border about 40 miles (64 kilometres) northeast of Calcutta.
The agency, quoting reports reaching Calcutta, said the bombardment had been going unabated since early morning.
It said shells had fallen near the customs checkpost at Petrapole on the Indian side of the border from East Pakistan. The shelling came from the Jhingergacha area in East Pakistan it said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties on the Indian side.
Pakistani troops moved to within three miles (five kilometres) of the border in the Petrapole district about a week ago.
East Pakistani rifles units now supporting the “Liberation Army” of the so-called Republic of Bangla Desh, man the East Pakistan border post at Benapole, which stands opposits Petrapole.
Pakistani Troop Reentered Kushtia Town
In the south-western area, Pakistani troops were reported to have re-entered Kushtia town.
Troops were also reported to have reached the Mukti Fouj (Liberation Army) stronghold of Faridpur.
PTI said that the Bangla Desh Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed, and the Commander of the Bengali fighters General Mohammed Osmani, visited Mukti Fouj fighters in the nothern Rangpur district of East Pakistan Friday.
Ahmed praised the men for their fighting sprit, the ageny said- Reuter.
