Mujib upholds cause of unity: If Indonesia with 3,000 islands can do it, why can’t we
LAHORE, MARCH 6 (APP): SHEIKH MUJIBUR RAHMAN, PRESIDENT OF THE SIX-POINTERS AWAMI LEAGUE, SAID HERE TODAY THAT IF THREE THOUSAND ISLANDS OF INDONESIA COULD REMAIN UNITED WHY TWO WINGS OF THIS COUNTRY COULD NOT MAKE A UNITED PAKISTAN.
He was talking to newsmen shortly after his arrival from Dacca for the meeting of the Central Democratic Action Committee being held here later this evening.
He said “if we understand the feelings and interests of each other we can live in peace other wise there will be disaster.”
When a correspondent pointed out that for forging unity, the formula of give and take was to be practiced Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said “Bengal has taken many a time. Now it has nothing to give.” At Murree session of the Constituent Assembly in 1955 East Pakistan made a sacrifice of the right of representation on the population basis and agreed to parity. But did East Pakistan get parity in all respects, he asked.
He said he was convinced that the people of West Pakistan did not want the people of East Pakistan to be exploited and they had every sympathy for the demands of the East Pakistan people.
