সৈয়দপুর ও গোলাহাট সংখ্যালঘু গণহত্যা
১৯৭১ এর মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধে সৈয়দপুর হয়ে উঠেছিল পাকিস্তানিদের জল্লাদখানা। শহরে অবস্থিত সেনানিবাসের সৈন্য এবং বিপুল সংখ্যক অবাঙালি মিলে সৈয়দপুরে যেমন গণহত্যা করেছিল তেমনি হিন্দু মাড়োয়ারি ও ধনাঢ্য ব্যবসায়ীদের সম্পদ লুটপাট করেছিল। যুদ্ধের প্রথম প্রহরে স্থানীয় সংসদ সদস্য জনপ্রিয় রাজনীতিক ডাঃ জিরুল হকসহ বিপুল সংখ্যক রাজনীতিক পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনীর হাতে আটক হলে স্থানীয় উর্দুভাষী অবাঙালিরা বেপরোয়া হয়ে ওঠে। তারা পাকিস্তানি সৈন্যদের পথপ্রদর্শক হিসেবে এডভান্স পার্টির ভূমিকা রাখে। বেশকিছু অবাঙালি নেতা ও তাদের ক্যাডাররা পুলিশের পোশাক পরে পাকিস্তানি বাহিনীর ন্যায় গণহত্যায় মেতে ওঠে। তাদের নির্যাতনের ফলে প্রথম কয়েকদিনেই বেশ কয়েক হাজার বাঙালি গণহত্যার শিকার হন। কার্যতঃ সৈয়দপুর শহরের অলিগলি কসাইখানার মতো রক্তে ভেসে যায়। পাকিস্তানি বাহিনী ও তাদের স্থানীয় দোসরদের অত্যাচারের পর যেভাবে পারে পালিয়ে বাঁচার চেষ্টা করেন। অন্যরা পালাতে না পেরে বিভিন্ন জায়গায় আত্মগোপন করার চেষ্টা করেন। সে সংখ্যাও কম নয়। অবাঙালিরা স্থায়ীভাবে হিন্দু মাড়োয়ারিদের সম্পদ আত্মসাৎ করার মানসে ফন্দি আটতে থাকে। তাদের কাছে খবর ছিল এখনো বিপুল সংখ্যক হিন্দু ব্যবসায়ী সৈয়দপুর শহর ও আশপাশে লুকিয়ে আছে। এমতাবস্থায় পাকিস্তানি সৈন্য ও অবাঙালিরা সৈয়দপুরের হিন্দু মাড়োয়ারিদের হত্যার পরিকল্পনা করে। ১২ জুন রাতে সৈয়দপুর সেনানিবাসে পাকিস্তানি সেনাবাহিনীর সাথে স্থানীয় অবাঙালিরা মিলে পরিকল্পনা করে হিন্দু গণহত্যা ও লুটতরাজের। তারই অংশ হিসেবে সৈয়দপুর শহর ও আশপাশে পাকিস্তানিরা মাইকে প্রচার করতে থাকে ভারত গমনেচ্ছু হিন্দুদের নিরাপদ সীমান্তে পৌঁছে দেয়ার জন্য একটি স্পেশাল ট্রেন ১৩ জুন সকালে সৈয়দপুর স্টেশন থেকে ভারত অভিমুকে ছেড়ে যাবে। স্থানীয় স্বাধীনতা বিরোধিরা সৈয়দ শহরের হিন্দু মাড়োয়ারিদের জানায় তারা নিরাপদে ভারত যেতে চাইলে তাদেরকেও সেই ট্রেনে করে সীমান্তে পৌঁছে দেয়া হবে। এ ধরনের আশ্বাসে হিন্দু জনগোষ্ঠির যারা ভারতে গমন করতে পারেননি কিন্তু প্রায় অবরুদ্ধ অবস্থায় আছেন তারা বিশ্বাস করে সীমান্ত
মুখী ট্রেনে চেপে বসেন। ওই ট্রেনটি সকাল দশটায় সৈয়দপুর স্টেশন থেকে ছেড়ে কিছুদূর যাওয়ার পর পরিকল্পিতভাবে গোলাহাট নামক স্থানে থেমে যায়। তখন ট্রেনটিতে চল্লিশ পঞ্চাশ জন মুসলিম থাকলেও অবশিষ্ট প্রায় অর্ধ সহস্র হিন্দু যাত্রী ছিলেন। ট্রেনটি থামার পর সেখানে অবাঙালিরা তরবারিসহ নানা ধরনের মারাত্মক অস্ত্রে ট্রেনের যাত্রীদের আক্রমণ করে। নারী-পুরুষ নির্বিশেষে দেহ থেকে মস্তক বিচ্ছিন্ন করতে থাকে। সেদিন তারা নিরীহ হিন্দুদের শুধু হত্যাই করেনি তারা হতভাগ্যদের সাথে থাকা টাকা-পয়সা সোনাদানাও লুট করে নেয়। তারা জানত ভারত যাবার সময় প্রত্যেক হিন্দু তাদের শেষ সম্বল টাকা-পয়সা ও সোনা-দানা সঙ্গে য়ে আসবে। ঐ দিনের গণহত্যায় ৪৪৮ জন হিন্দু শহিদ হন। যাদের অধিকাংশৈই ছিলেন মাড়োয়ারি সম্প্রদায়ের সদস্য। যাঁদের মধ্যে সৈয়দপুরের বিশিষ্ট মাড়োয়ারি ব্যবসায়ী সুশীল কুমার আগরওয়াল, নিজকুমার আগরওয়াল, লেখরাম আগরওয়াল, যমুনা প্রসাদ কেডিয়া, রঞ্জিত ঘোষ ও যমুনা প্রসাদ আগরওয়ালের পরিবার অন্যতম। এ পরিবারগুলোর প্রায় সব সদস্যকেই হত্যা করে জল্লাদ বাহিনী। পাকিস্তানিরা গোলাহাট গণহত্যার নাম দিয়েছিল ‘অপারেশন খরচাপাতা’।

উল্লেখ্য, সৈয়দপুরের বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিত্ব শহিদ দিলীপ কুমার মুখার্জীর পরিবারের সকল সদস্য, শহিদ আতিয়ারের পরিবারের সকল সদস্য, শহিদ মনিরুজ্জামানের পরিবারের সকল সদস্য, শহিদ আব্দুল হকের পরিবারের সকল সদস্য, রামচন্দ্র আগরওয়ালের পরিবারের ৭ জন সদস্য, ভগবান দাস সিংহানীয়ার পরিবারের ৩ জন সদস্য, বিশ্বনাথ আগরওয়ালের পরিবারের ৬ জন সদস্য, প্রহল্লাদরাম আগরওয়ালের পরিবারের ৬ জন সদস্য, ফুলচাঁদ কেডিয়ার পরিবারের ৫ জন সদস্য, সাওয়ালরাম সিংহানীয়ার পরিবারের ১০ জন সদস্য, রামেশ্বরলাল আগরওয়ালের পরিবারের ৬ জন সদস্য। এছাড়াও একাধিক সদস্য শহিদ হয়েছেন এমন পরিবারের সংখ্যা শতাধিক। দেশ স্বাধীনের পর একটি মামলা সৈয়দপুর থানায় দায়ের হয়েছিল। সে মামলার ইংরেজি এজাহারের অনুলিপি সংযুক্ত করা হলো। এজাহারটির কপি শহিদ যমুনা প্রসাদ কেডিয়ার পুত্রের কাছ থেকে সংগ্রহ করেছিলেন একাত্তরে চিলাহাটী সাব-সেক্টরের কমান্ডার ফ্লা. লে. ইকবাল রশীদ (অব.)।

We, the resident of Saidpur, District Rangpur in Bangladesh, the worst suffers in the hands of Non Bengali Muslim population of Saidpur after the army crackdown of 25th March, 1971, beg to report the following facts for necessary actions against the culprits who committed the inhuman crimes in the name of beating, looting, killing etc. In collaboration with pak army—
That soon after the army crackdown of 25th March 1971. Conspiracy was in behead by the non-Bengali Muslims of Saidpur to eliminate the Bengali Muslims and Hindus of Saidpur of revenge their defeat in election and to manipulate their properties amongst the conspirators. For the purpose a committee as formed “Saidpur Relief committee”, which composed of 1) Qaayum (Secretary Relief Committee), 2) Salim Khan (Chairman UC), 3) Amanul Huq 4) Md Ezhar (Ex-chairman U.C) 5) Md Zamiruddin (Vice chairman) 6) Sagir Hasmi 7) Moulana Main Hasmi 8) Md Foiz contractor (chairman) 9) Haji Sahsibul Haq 10) Rafiq Ahmed (Civil Admnistrator) 11) Md Ismail (Chairman) 12) Dr G M Khan 13) Md Quasmi (A.W.M.C). The so called relief committee was the terror for the people other than Non-Bengali Muslims. All the genocide act committed at Saidpur were decided upon by this committee and execuated through this members and their subordinates. Colonel Shafi (C.O) Mejor Javid Yanus (Deputy Martial Law Administrator) Captain Bakhtiar Lal, Captain Gul, Havilder Major Fateh Khan were the the co-sharer in their illegal gains, as such the committee was at liberty to take any decision against the people other than non-Bengali Muslims as the permission of the martial Law authority came in without any reservations.
That the action started against the people of Saidpur (other than non-Bengali Muslims) on 27th March 1971, when at about 4 a.m. twenty army personal led by captain Gul along with Md Rustam (B.D. Member) Kamal Arman (alis Ramjani), Washimul Huq, Shamsul Huq (B.D. Member) Md Siraj (Previously Passport broker) Md Neamatullah (B.D. Member), Hafiz and others whose names are mentioned schedul “A” raided out houses and ransacked the premises completely and beat all the inmates of the house mercilessly and took with them whatever they could put their hands on. The army and the aforesaid people looted all the valuables such as cash, ornaments, radios watches, Almirahs, Motor Cycles, cows, Iron safe, Refrigerations, Type writers, electric fan, sewing machines and clothes comprising several lacs of rupees. All those above mentioned people were connected with the so called Relief Committee which was the main collaborator of the occupied army. When they left out houses they took with them Dr Zikrul Huq, Mr Tulshiram Agarwala, Dr Badeozzaman, Mr Jamuan Prasad Kedia, Mr Ram Shwarlal Agarwal, Dr Samsul Huq, Dr Yakub Ali, Mr Hariram Agarwala, Punal Chand Agarwala, Lekhram Agarwala, and Sonaram Agarwala The where about of these people is unknown till tis day. People having different set of interests worked in different directions, Mr Ezar Ahmed (Jute Merchant) Nisar Ahmed Khan (Manager Hamid Co.) Ainul—(Jute Merchant) Sultan—and others mentioned in the schedule “B” wanted to eliminate the Bengalees and Hindus to monopolies the respective trade.
So the aided and abided in the acts of genocide collaboration with the army and Saidpur Relief committee, As for instance M/S Singhania Jut Press and Murlidhar Bane chand Jut press were allotted to M/S Ezhar Bros and Hamid and Co respectively.
We were also subjected to forced labour. We had to work for the construction of Airport from 6 am to 7 pm under inhuman conditions and torture. We work under the supervision of Havilder Mejor Fatah Ali Khan, who was very cruel and used to whip us mercilessly. He was very friendly Kamal Arman (Ramjani), this later gentleman tipped regarding of financial position of each of us to Fateh Ali Khan who for the purpose of taking bribe selected one of us at a time and subjected him to special treatment by entrusting him with very hard work and lashing him continuously so that he could not endure the oracle. In this way Fateh Khan squeezed at least Rs 30,000/ from us through Kamal Arman (Ramjani).
That on 18th May at about 11 p.m. eight persons were kidnapped from their houses by Md Aziz (cloth merchant) Md Hafiz (younger brother of Aziz) Ainul Huq (cloth merchant Rly. Bazar) Md Sadrul (Madina Store) Sattar Vutt, Md Wasim s/o Ayub Sonar, Siraj (Previously Passport broker) along with Aslam Sabedar and army personal. The where about of these kidnapped persons could not be ascertained till this day as they were known to be killed by bayonets on that same night. The unfortunate victims were Durga Prasad Agarwala, Mahabir Prasad Somani, Jyotish Chandra, Khagendra Nath and Nirmal Chandra. All other victims were reputed businessman.
On 6th Jun 1971 we were summoned by Md Quayam relief in charge Saidpur relief committee in his office in his office on a false pretext that Major Javid Younus would address us regarding some important matters. There Mr Zamel officer in charge Saidpur P.S. along with non bengalee police boarded us forcibly in a bus and taken to the cantonment under police escort. There and the Hindus male members numbering about 80 above the age of 12 were arrested and kept confined in the military cell and subjected to inhuman torture.
On the 9th Jun, 1971 when we were still in cantonment Colonel Shafi Major Javid, Captain Bakhtiar Lal, Md Quayam, Md Zamal, o/c, and all other relief committee Members went to our houses and threaten the woman folks that there male members would be shot dead if they kept concealed any valuable from them and such they looted all the remaining cash, ornaments and other valuable amounting to lacs of rupees. They also forced as to sign banks papers and cheques for their nefarious design. Bank lockers were opened and contents snatched away by them. As for instance bank lockers of Mr Jamuan Prasad Kedia in National Bank of Pakistan, Saidpur was liquidated forcibly from the than Manager, National bank of Pakistan Saidpur or. Sarker.
Thereafter on 13th Jun 1971 at about 2 a.m. we were awakened cantonment by the army orders on duty and boarded on a bus great hassle and brought to the Saidpur Railway Station under non Bengali police nonbearing about twenty fiveled by Mr Zamal officer in charge, Saidpur police station and Subedar Aslam. Our family members were also brought there and we were informed by Mr Jamal that we would be sent to India via chilahati boarder. We were boarded in a train along with our family members totaling about 400 hundred in four compartment under non-Bengali police and military supervision. The females and the children were boarded int he train and fourth compartment separately. At the station Mr Quayam, Nessar Ahmed (Manager Hamid & co.) Sagir Hasmi (in charge of Razaker) Jamir (Vice Chairman) Rafigue (Civil Administrator of Saidpur) Amanul Haque, Md Ezahar (Ex-Chairman) came to meet us and consoled us with the works that at last they had saved our lives by convincing the army Authority to send us to India.
At about 4 a.m. the train started towards Chilahati but it stopped at distance of about one mile area Saidpur Station near a grave yard known as mran Katai where we found the notorious Goondas of Saidpur named as Mahiuddin (peon of Municipality) Mehandi (panwala) Ismail (brother of Mohandi) Osman of Golahat (Hath Katta) S ampat (Golahat) Usman (Keya Mistripara) and others whose names are mentioned in schedule “C”.
As soon as train stopped Md Jamal Officer-in charge Saidpur P.S. Havilder Murtaza, Constable Soderddin A.S.I, Nazmul Huda, and Constable 129, Sheikh Muslim along with twenty five others non Bengali police (to whom we will be able to indentify) alighted from the train and took possession with their guns outside the boggies. After a while the executioners started their work, we saw to our management that this four goondas boarded the first (we were occupying the second one) and they tied the hands of one person and taken him away and out his neck with the sowrd and threw him in the ditch. When we saw the facts of the Seventeen person. We requested Md Jamal Officer in charge and Aslam Sudedar to shoot us all at a time instead of butchering us. He threatened us to keep quite as we would be executed in the manner decided upon and approved by the Saidpur Relief committee and Martial Law Authority respectively. The next moment we started to jump from the train shot dead by bullets. As soon we started to jumping down from train they opened fire from all directions indiscriminately. We started run halter skeltter and in the confusion out of eighty occupants of second boggie, 21 persons including myself manage to escape from the scene of massacre. Name of the persons escaped were 1) Probhu dayal Agarwala, 2) Moti Lal Agarwala, 3) Baiznath Agarwala, 4) Satya Narayan Agarwala, 5) Sitaram Agarwala, 6) Copichand Agarwala, 7) Rambilash Agarwala, 8) Omprakash Agarwala 9) Joyram Lal Agarwala, 10) Binod Kumar Agarwala, 11) Ram babu Agarwala and others In this about three murder seventy nine human being including male and female young and old and children ageing eighty years to six months old were butchered by the goondas and non-Bengali police appointed by the so called Relief committee in collaborations with pak army. Soon after excaping scene of massacre we took shelter in nearly village in the houses of the following persons who helped us to cross over to India. ;- Alauddin Saha s/o Asoruddin, Dighal Haq Dangi P.O. Berakuti, Abdul Rahman Saskanoar, Mozammel Haq of dagarbari Fazle Rahman dagarbari, Md Islam dagarbari, Md Mumotaz Hossain sarker of Purba Belpukar post Hajarihat, Md Quazi of Paschim Belpukur Hajarhat, Ezuddin Sarker Purba Belpukar Hajarihat, Ajimuddin Sarker Paschim Belpukur Hajarihat and others.
Therfore, we the unfortunate escapes who had the misfortune to leave behind their nearest and dearest to be slaughtered by those enemies of mankind ask you to bring the culprits bock and punish them as the law provides. Our only the offence was that we were other than non-Bengalies we voted for Awami League,
