Executive Council
Immediate meeting held on Saturday, the 24th February, 1952, at 10 a. m. in the Vice-Chancellor’s House. (Council Room).
Present:
1. The Vice-Chancellor,
2. the Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
3. The Dean of the Faculty of Science.
4. The Dean of the Faculty of Law.
5. The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
6. The Provost of S. M. Hall.
7. The Provost of F. H. M. Hall.
8. The Provost of Dacca Hall.
9. The Treasurer.
10. President, East Bengal Secondary Education Board.
11. The Principal, Eden Girl’s College, Dacca.
12. The Principal, Rangpur College.
13. The Principal, B. M. College, Barisal.
14. Syed A. B. M. Hossain.
15. A. H. Talukdar.
Resolved : That this Council has heard with great sorrow of the sudden death of Mr. Fazlur Rahman, Director of Public Instruction, East Bengal, and conveys its deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family. Considered : The situation arising out of the happenings on the 21st February, 1952, and subsequent days. Resolved Unanimously : 1. That this Council places on record its deep sense of grief and sorrow at the tragic death of, and injuries to, a number of students which took place on the 21st of February, 1952, and afterwards.
2. That this Council takes serious exception to the entry of the Police within the premises of the University and other educational institutions.
3. That the University be closed on Monday, the 25th February, 1952, as a mark of respect to the students who lost their lives and in sympathy with their bereaved families and with the injured students, and in protest against the Police excesses resulting in death and injuries.
Further resolved : That the Executive Council urges upon the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan to adopt Bengali as one of the States languages of Pakistan and thať a copy of this resolution be sent to all members of the Constituent Assembly.
