Six-point defended Paltan demands autonomy

A public meeting at Paltan Maidan on Sunday declared that the six-point demand was a means to realise provincial autonomy and not aimed at weakening the national unity. The meeting said autonomy has today become the demand of the people.
The meeting demanded withdrawal of emergency and release of all political detenus including Shaikh Mujibur Rahman to restore healthy situation in the national politics.
The meeting also demanded release of all journalists including Mr. Tofazzal Hossain, Editor, the Ittefaq, and Aga Shoresh Qureshi of West Pakistan.
Expressing concern over the measures adopted to curb the freedom of expression the meeting demanded withdrawal of restrictions on the Press and restoration of the New Nation Press from which the Ittefaq and two other weeklies used to come out.
Organised by East Pakistan Awami League the meeting was presided over by Syed Nazrul Islam, acting President of the party. Mr. Jahiruddin General Secretary, Pakistan Awami League, Mrs. Amena Begum, acting General Secretary, East Pakistan Awami League, Mr. Abdul Malek Ukil, Leader of the Opposition in East Pakistan Assembly, Advocate M. A. Rob, Mr. Nurul Huq MPA and Rafiquddin Bhuiya were among those who addressed the meeting.
The meeting urged the Government to withdraw all warrants of arrest against political workers and all cases brought against them in connection with the June 7 incidents. Another resolution demanded compensation to the families of the victims of the June 7 firing.
