Mujib’s Trial Inside Jail Starts

The hearing of the case against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, President of the East Pakistan Awami League, under the Defence of Pakistan Rules (DPR) for alleged Prejudicial speech at the Outer Stadium in Dacca on March 20 started yesterday inside the Dacca Central Jail, in the Court of Mr. Afsaruddin Ahmed, Magistrate First Class, Dacca, reports PPA.
As many as five prosecution witnesses two police officers and three Government reporters-were examined yesterday when the Court adjourned. The next date of the hearing is September 10.
Before the examination of the witnesses started the Defence lawyers submitted two petitions to the court one praying for holding the trial in any court room of the Dacca magistracy. This petition was rejected. The other petition for allowing the relations and friends of the accused to attendthe court was, however, allowed.
It may be mentioned here that there are at the moment as many as 9 cases against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, including one appealed before the High Court. Eleven lawyers defended the accused.
They are Mr. Abdus Salam Khan, Mr. Zahiruddin, Mr. M. A. Rab, Md. Abul Hossain, Mr. Forman Ullah Khan, Mr. F. Zoha Chowdhury, Mr. Khandaker Mahbub Hussain, Siddiquer Rahman Hazra and A. Khaleque Sarder.
Mr. Sohrab Bakht Assistant Public Prosecutor assisted by Mr. A. L. Khaleque DSP (Court) appeared for the prosecution.
