Case against Mujib: hearing starts

DACCA, Aug 8: Hearing of the case against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, President of the East Pakistan Awami League, under the Defence of Pakistan Rules (DPR) for alleged prejudicial speech delivered at the Outer Stadium here on March 20, started today inside the Dacca Central Jail in the court of Mr Afsaruddin Ahmed, Magistrate.
The speech was delivered at the annual conference of the party. As many as five prosecution witnesses – two police officers and three Government reporters – were examined today till the court adjourned for Sept 10.
Before the examination of the witnesses started the defence lawyers submitted two petitions to the court, one praying for holding the trial in any court room of the Dacca Magistracy was rejected. The other petition for allowing the relations and friends of the accused to attend the court was, however, allowed.
It may be mentioned here that these are at the moment as many as nine cases against him.
Eleven lawyers defended the accused today. They are Mr Abdus Salam Khan, Mr Zahiruddin, Mr M. A. Rab, Mr Md Abul Hossain, Mr. Formanullah Khan, Mr F. Zoha Chowdhury, Mr Khandkar Mahbub Husain, Mr Siddiqur Rahman Hazra and Mr A. Khaleque Sardar, Mr Sohrab Bakht. Assistant Public Prosecutor, assisted by Mr A. L. Khaleque, appeared for the prosecution. –PPA
