Mujib’s arrest criticised

DACCA, May 12: Maulana Abdur Rahim, Amir of the East Pakistan Jamaat-i-Islami, yesterday condemned the arrest of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other Awami Leaguers under the Defence of Pakistan Rules.
This action of the Government he said, had not only provoked widespread indignation but had also give “under importance” to Awami Leagues six-point programme.
In a statement here, he said the people of this province would have rejected the six-points in its totality if they had been provided with an opportunity to study the programme dispassionately. But, he added, the repressive measures resorted to by the Administration had only helped the exponents six-points to thrive.
In this connection the Maulana said that his party had already pointed out the inherent defects in the six-points programme and also the consequences that were bound to follow.
He expressed the apprehension that the Government action in arresting Sheikh Mujib would popularise the six-point programme in East Pakistan.
He strongly criticised the use of DPR for political charges against Sheikh Mujibur the Government should try to establish in the court of law, he said. —PPA
