MUJIB DEMANDS JUDICIAL PROBE

DACCA, Feb 18: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Awami League leader; has demanded a judicial inquiry into the unfortunate incident in which the University Professor; Dr Mahmud, was assaulted.
Addressing a Press conference here yesterday, he demanded that miscreants should be punished adequately. Regretting that such unfortunate incident could occur he said there must be some deep rooted conspiracy behind it. Sheikh Mujib made a strong plea for creating proper academic atmosphere in the University.
PPA adds: The Executive Council of the East Pakistan Union of Journalists (EPUJ) has demanded the setting up of a high powered committee headed by a High Court Judge to probe into Tuesday’s incident in the Dacca University involving several journalists.
In a resolution passed at a meeting held yesterday it strongly condemned the “rowdy behaviour of a section of the students” and urged the authorities “to bring the miscreants and those behind the scene to book.”
The meeting regretted that the unfortunate incidents occurred “In presence of the Police officers on duty” who failed to check the rioting
The Pabna branch of the East Pakistan Journalists Association (EPJA) yesterday demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident involving assault on the Press reporters and photographers by a section of “unruly students” in Dacca on Tuesday.
The EPJA Branch at an emergency meeting held under the chairmanship of Mr. Nuruzzaman at the local press Club also urged the Government to bring the culprits to book.
V.C.’s HOUSE ATTACKED
Meanwhile, 13 teachers, officers, and employees of the Dacca University yesterday affirmed in a statement that the ViceChancellor’s residence was attacked by a number of “miscreants” on Feb 15.
They said they were obliged to issue this statement because they felt that an impression had been current in certain quarters that nothing serious happened in the Vice-Chancellor’s house on that date. Signatories to the statement included the Registrar of the University, Mr A.H. Talukdar; two Professors, – Mr M. Ahmad (Chemistry) and Mr K. Ahmad (Biochemistry) two Readers – Mr Aminul Islam (Soil Science) and Mr M. Rahman (Mathematics); two engineers, Secretary to the V.C. an office assistant and stenographer. —PPA.
