Mujib’s 6-point plan will weaken Pakistan
MAUDOODI’s PLEA
CHITTAGONG, Feb 19: Maulana Abul Ala Maudoodi, chief of the Jamaat-i-Islami, said here on Friday that the six-point programme of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, General Secretary of East Pakistan Awami League, would disintegrate and weaken Pakistan. He was addressing a public meeting at Laldighi Maidan on Friday evening.
Maulana Maudoodi said the scheme of Sheikh Mujib would make East Pakistan vulnerable to outside attack.
The six-point programme would deal a cruel blow to the unity and solidarity of Pakistan, and its people.
The Maulana said the six-point programme, envisaging wider powers to the regional federating units stated to be the only constitutional framework for national solidarity, integrity and prosperity, would in fact have the reverse effect on national life. He added that the tie that binds the two Wings becomes almost non-existent under the programme.
It was not the right time to present this sort of programme.
The Jamaat chief said that for the present there could be only a one-point programme for all political parties and that was restoration of democracy. He observed that different political parties could place before the people their individual programmes only after democracy has been restored.
He said he had always advocated for the cause of East Pakistan and supported full provincial autonomy for East Pakistan. —APP.
An APP report from Karachi adds:
Maulana Asadul Quadri, President of Majlis Ulama-i-Pakistan criticised the suggesion by my Mujibur Rahman of the Awami League for greater provincial autonomy for East Pakistan.
In a statement he said the suggestion had to be read in the light of Mr. Rahman’s performance since the establishment of Pakistan.
He said Mr. Rahman belonged to the “same Awami League which had advocated joint electorate of Muslims and non-Muslims in Pakistan and therefore, his six-Point programme should be treated with grain of self” – APP.
