High Court Grants Bail
Sheikh Mujib convicted

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was convicted and sentenced by Mr. B. Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Dacca on Friday, on charge of sedition to undergo simple imprisonment for one year.
He was further convicted and sentenced to undergo simple imprisonment for one year more under East Pakistan Public Safety Ordinance, 1958. Both the sentences run concurrently.
| Sheikh Mujib was later granted ad interim bail by Mr. Justice T. Talukder of the Dacca High Court. Sheikh Mujib was released from the Dacca Central Jail in the evening. He was at the jail for four hours.
Earlier after the judgement was pronounced a bail petition on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was moved in a jampacked court. But the Court rejected the bail petition on hearing lawyers of both the sides stating therein that he has no power to grant bail under law.
The prosecution case in brief is that on December 15, 1963, an all-party meeting was held to condole the death of Mr. H. S. Suhrawardy. The outer Stadium meeting was presided over by Mr. Nurul Amin. In the meeting Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was alleged to have delivered a speech, which, according to prosecution, created disaffection, contempt and hatred in the minds of the people against the Government.
The prosecution exhibited some documents in the Court and examined some oral evidences as well.
The Court after discussing the evidences on record found the accused guilty U/S 124A PPC and under Section 7(3) of the Public Safety Ordinance, 1958.
The judgement was delivered at about 11-30 A. M. It contains 27 pages.
Mr. M. A. Alam Public Prosecutor conducted the prosecution case. While Mr. M. A. Salam, Advocate along with other lawyers defended the accused.
The sedition case against Skeikh Mujibur Rahman was started in early 1964. In all eleven witnesses were examined. All the witnesses were called by the prosecution. There was no witness for the defence.
There are four more cases pending against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
