Mujibur Rahman sentenced to one year’s S.I.
DACCA, Jan. 28: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, General-Secretary of the East Pakistan Awami League, was today convicted and sentenced to one years’s simple imprisonment by Mr M. B. Alam, Additional District Magistrate, Dacca.
The Awami League leader was found guilty under Section 124 (A), PPC, and Section 7 (3) of the East Pakistan Public Safety Ordinance 1958, for each of the two charges. He was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment which will run concurrency.
Sheikh Mujib was prosecuted for a public speech which was considered seditious. He delivered it two years ago at the public meeting held to express condolence on the death of Mr H. S. Suhrawardy, a former Prime Minister of Pakistan.
After the judgment was delivered, the counsel for Sheikh Mujib moved the Court for an Ad Interim Bail, which the Magistrate rejected, later, a Bail Petition was moved before the High Court, which granted it.
He was taken to Police custody after the trying Magistrate rejected the bail petition. He was released from the Dacca Central Jail after the High Court granted the Bail Petition. – APP
