Mujib challenges Wahid to fight bye-election with him

DACCA, April 24: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former General Secretary of the defunct East Pakistan Awami League, yesterday challenged the Central Commerce Minister, Mr. Wahiduzzaman, to contest bye-election if the “President withdraws the disqualification order passed against me.”
In a statement to the Press, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman claimed that he would defeat the Central Minister even if the election was held on a limited franchise basis.
The former Awami League leader issued the statement in reply to the Minister’s reported Press talk at Lahore Airport on Sunday when according to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Minister said that he would defeat anybody in the byeelection in his constituency”, in case he quits Ministership. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman recalled that he had beaten Mr. Wahiduzzaman by more than 10,000 votes in the last general elections.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also referred to Mr. Wahiduzzaman’s reported remarks about certain East Pakistani newspapers. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said that “every newspaper is also a viewspaper. Government patronage should go to those papers which have sufficient circulation. Government money is not anybody’s personal property. -APP
