Suhrawardy’s public meeting in Jessore
JESSORE, Oct 12: The National Democratic Front Leader, Mr. H.S. Suhrawardy, addressing a public meeting here yesterday (partly covered in yesterday’s Dawn) alleged that the Government had appointed Parliamentary Secretaries only to issue statements against him and to indulge in Government propaganda. But, he maintained, the more they speak ill of us, the more confidence of the people we shall gain”. He further told the gathering that Democratic consciousness had stirred up the people in West Pakistan also.
The NDF leader concluded his public address with a call to each and every person to carry the NDF message to every nook and corner of the country and to stand united under its banner for the restoration of full democracy of the country. Shah Azizur Rahman, former Secretary of the Provincial Muslim League, Said that the purpose for which Pakistan had been achieved had been “frustrated”. The dreams of millions of people who voted for Pakistan, he contended, had been shattered.
Not to speak of ruling their country in accordance with their wishes, the people have been deprived of even exercising their vote, he added.
He regretted that the present Constitution did not provide for adult franchise by the exercise of which the people had achieved Pakistan.
He alleged that the people who fought for Pakistan were still rotting in detention “while those who had opposed the Pakistan movement, has styled themselves as heroes”. The meeting was also addressed by Sheikh Mujiber Rahman, Mr. Mahmud Ali and Begum Rokayya Anwar, MNA.
Earlier, Mr. Suhrawardy on his arrival here from Dacca was accorded a tumultous reception. Thousands of people including lawyers, students and businessmen jammed the airport to welcome the NDF leader. Prominent among those present on the occasion were Mr. Masihur Rhman, exProvincial Minister Mr. Abdul Khaleque, ex-Central Minister, Mr. Syed Shamsur Rahman, former President, District Muslim League, Mr. Abdur Rashid, MNA, Dr. Ahad Ali, MPA, Mr. Mosharaf Husain Khan, ex-MPA, and Mr. Anwar Ali, MPA.-PPA
