Chandpur, Oct. 14:- A Government which is not backed by popular support is thoroughly incompetent to run the administration of a country, observed Mr. H. S. Suhrawardy at a huge public meeting held here today. reports PPA.
Mr. Suhrawardy who was not originally scheduled to address any gathering here, had to do so in response to the tumultuous ovation with which he was greeted here. People in large numbers poured in to listen to the former Prime Minister.
Elaborating, he said the present system of government in Pakistan which did not recognise the will of the people, was certainly not a democratic form of Government. He further maintained that peoples Government alone could strengthen the foundation of the country.
Sounding a note of caution to the people, he remarked that the way to democracy was full of thorns and that the people should be prepared to achieve this goal.
Lauding the students movement in the country. Mr. Suhrawardy said they had set up an example of how to make a concerted move for the realisation of a common objective. He called upon the people to draw inspiration from the example set by the students and to make united effort for the restoration of democracy in the country:
Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, congratulated the people of Chandpur for their warmth of feelings with which they had greeted Mr. Suhrawardy.
The nation he said, was undergoing a critical phase. The condition of the poor had further worsened, corruption had increased and education had become something beyond the reach of the common man. Patriots like Maulana Bhashani were till rotting in detention. All these, he charged were the achievements of the Martial Law.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman contended that all these problems will be solved when the people’s Government was restored. He asked the people to remain united for the achievement of these objectives.
Later, Mr. Suharawardy left by launch for Dacca, concluding the present tour which also took him to Jessore, Khulna and Barisal.
