Big reception accorded to Suhrawardy
OPPONENTS STAGE BLACKFLAG RALLY

By Dawn staff correspondent
Mr. H.S. Suhrawardy was accorded a rousing reception by a large number of his followers at the Cantonment Railway Station yesterday when he arrived there from Lahore by Tezgam.
The reception was, however, marred by a black-flag demonstration staged by his opponents outside the Railway station.
The demonstrators carried placards and raised antiSuhrawardy slogans.
At one time the situation became critical as National Democratic Front workers and the demonstrators came face to face. The Police intervened and stood between the two rival slogan-shouting groups.
LATHI-CHARGE
The Police resorted to lathicharge to dispers the supporters of National Democratic Front who wanted to take out a procession.
Permission for the procession had been withdrawn in view of the ugly situation, but they were allowed to take out a procession in vehicles, not on foot.
As the former Awami League Chief got down from the train he profusely garlanded, and slogans of “National Front Zindabad” and “Suhrawardy Zindabbad” were raised.
When Mr. Suhrawady came out of the Railway Station, some demonstrators carrying black flags came to the fore loaded in seven trucks. The demonstrators also shouted slogans such as “Muslim League Zindabad”, “Ayub Khan Zindabad” and “Pakistan Zindabad”. Mr. Suhrawardy had left by then. The blackflag demonstrators, who remained in the trucks all through, also went away and the crowd also dispersed. Later the black flag demonstrators went round the City shouting anti Suhrawardy slogans.
With Mr. Suhrawardy also arrived shaikh Mujibur Rahman, Mr. Abdus Salam, a former Provincial Minister; Mr. Mahmood Ali, former NAP leader; Begum Ruquaiya Anwar, Mr. Hussain Mansoor and Mr. Ahmad Husain, MNAs from East Pakistan; and Mr. Nasrullah Khan, MNA from West Pakistan.
Those who went to receive Mr. Suhrawardy and the East Pakistan leaders included Mr. Ataur Rehman Khan, Mr. Zahiruddin, Mr. Azizul Huq, Mr. Mohammad Suleman, Shah Azizur Rehman, Mr. Hashimuddin, Maj. Afsarudin, Mr. Abdul Majid Sindhi, Mr. Mahmoodul Huq Usmani and Mohan Mian, Mir. Rasul Bux Talpur and …..
Slogans raised by the supportors of Mr. Suhrawardy were: “Restore democracy,” “Release all political prisoners”, “End dictatorship”, “Stop repression”, “Goonda Gardi Hai Hai”, “Allow 12 City students to come back”, “End three-yeardegree course”, “Dacca firing Hai Hai” and “Suhrawardy Zindabad.”
Slogans raised by the blackflag demonstrators were: “President Ayub Zindabad”, “Opponents of Pakistan Murdabad”, “Muslim League Zindabad”, “Disciple of Gandhi go back”, “Hindu agent Murdabad“, “Suhrawardy Murdabad” etc.
