Sheikh Mujibur to Be put Under House Arrest 

 

RAWALPINDI,- Pakistan President Zulfiker Ali Bhutto has announced that he will soon release into house arrest Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, hero of the East Pakistan secestonist movement.

At a reception for foreign correspondents here Tuesday night the newly installed President said Sheikh Mujib, who recently stood trial for “crimes against Pakistan,” would be taken from prison and allowed, to live under a form of house arrest.

It was the sweeping election victory of the Awamy League in December 1970 and later demands for greater autonmy which led to the Pakistan military crackdown against Bengali separatists, the arrest of Sheikh Mujib and finally to the fourth IndoPakistan conflict in 24 years.

Bhutto, sworn in following the resignation of President Yahya Khan Monday, has appointed 78-year-old East Pakistan political leader Nurul Amin as his VicePresident. Rtr.
