YAHYA KHAN RESIGNS

Bhutto Sworn-in as New President Zulfiker Ali Bhutto has been sworn in as new President of Pakistan, BBC reported yesterday evening quoting Radio Pakistan.

He succeded General Yahya Khan, who had decided to resign in response to a series of demonstrations launched over the week-end blaming president Yahya Khan for misleading the public and letting the army go out to face defeat.

Bhutto, leader of the Pakistan People’s Party, the biggest political party in Pakistan after the Awami League was banned, had just returned from New York.

Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister in the Nurul Amin civilian government set up during the war but never sworn in. Bhutto had been at the United Nations for more than a week putting Pakistan’s case in the debate over the war with India.

Yahya Khan asked him Saturday to return home and take part in the government. Radio Pakistan monitored AFP in Paris Saturday had it that Bhutto had been appointed Prime Minister.

The new Pakistani President was expected to address the nation last night but it was too late for today’s paper.
