Center asked to take charge of 1 million evacuees

By A Staff Reporter, The West Bengal Government on Saturday has written to the Center to take charge of one million evacuees at various camps in North Bengal.
A Relief Department spokesman told newsmen that the Union Government had recently taken over charge of one million evacuees when a similar request was made. He hoped that in view of the critical situation prevailing in the country following the threat of an attack by Pakistan the Center would come forward to take direct charge of these Bangladesh evacuees.
He said if the Union Government conceded the State’s request there would still be nearly three million evacuees under the direct supervision of the West Bengal Government.
