RATIONS FOR REFUGEES
Government Taking Over Distribution
From Our Staff Correspondent, SILIGURI, Oct, 31- Both Central and State Government field officers manning different Bangladesh refugee camps in north Bengal have reportedly suggested a major change in the present system of ration distribution among camp inmates. As a result it has been decided that the work now being done by contractors will henceforth be done departmentally by the Government in order to end corruption.
Reports of malpractices in refugee camps are believed to have reached the Centre and the high powered committee of Central officials led by Mr. P. N. Chopra, additional Secretary. The Union Home Ministry, which visited some camps in Jalpaiguri district on Friday, reportedly inquired into these allegations.
The other objectives of the present tour were to examine the ration distribution system in refugee camps, health, sanitary and security arrangements, progress in refugees and their relationship with the local people. .
They also held a meeting with Mr. B. S. Raghavan, Commissioner of Jalpaiguri Division, and the Deputy Commissioner of Jalpaiguri on Friday.
