‘Pindi asks UN to ascertain number of DPs in India

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 3 – Pakistan has asked the United Nations to find out how many people fled East Bengal during and after the recent civil war there.
Pakistan claims that only about two million have left while India says that about eight million have left, mostly for refugee camps in India.
Ambassador Agha Shahi said yesterday he made the request to UN Secretary General U Thant and that U Thant said he would think it over.
Mr. Shahi said it was not necessary that a UN agency itself do the work but that it could simply be a group or body empowered to act on behalf of the United Nations. He said the fact-finding group should go to both Pakistan and India – (AP).
