165 died of Cholera in refugee camps

KRISHNAGAR, May 29. At least 165 people have died in the last 24 hours in a virulent outbreak of cholera in the East Bengal refugee camps at Karimpur, about 45 km from here, report PTI and UNI.
The Chief Medical Officer of Nadia district said here today that cholera had broken out in an epidemic form and the exact figure of fatal seizures might be higher.
The CMO said 200 cholera patients have so far been admitted to the district hospital at Krishnagar and another 130 in Karimpur hospital.
The CMO said the services of Army medical officers had been requisitioned to cope with the situation.
About 100,000 refugees are camping at Karimpur and another 100,000 are reported to be coming from Faridpur district of Bangladesh.
All persons in Krishnagar town and neighboring areas have been ordered by the authorities to get themselves inoculated immediately. Sale of cut fruits, ice-cream and sweet drinks had been banned.
