6 Pak Seamen Granted Asylum in USA
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 22 – Six East Bengali seamen who jumped the Pakistani ship, Al Ahmadi two days ago at the port of Philadelphia on Friday were granted permission by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to remain in the USA at least a year, says AP.
Attorney Ellando Masino said the six had asked for asylum on grounds that they were afraid to return to their native land where they have wives and children.
The six had obtained shore leave from the freighter when it stopped here to pick up a cargo of tirecord, oil, tallow, zinc oxide and tin. Longshoremen however, refused to load the cargo and the ship moved on to New Yark.
