Yahya’s bid to divide and rule clearer than ever
From Our Special Correspondent, NEW DELHI, MAY 26- The Bangladesh parliamentary delegation now here. Sharply reacted against the Pakistani President’s pronouncements on East Bengal and members elected to the National Assembly.
Its spokesman said: “We just do not care what Yahya Khan says. The people of Bangladesh have declared independence. Ours is a sovereign country and it doesn’t matter what Yahya Khan or any other Khans say.”
The members of the delegation are Mr. Phani Majumdar (Leader) Mr. Moazzem Hossain and Mrs. Noorjahan Murshed.
Pakistan weather here, interpreting yesterday’s press statement by President Yahya Khan says that the Pak Army authorities are trying to drive a wedge in the ranks of East Bengals National Assembly members. It is suspected not without reasons that the Pak brass hats desire to set up a puppet government in East Bengal with the help of traitors.
It seems Mr. Yahya Khan intends to go ahead with the supposed help of about 50 National Assembly members taken into custody till new. But that will be of no gain to him.
A delegation spokesman said; “No, he cannot divide us. We knew a few National Assembly members had been arrested. We do not know the exact number. But it is not possible for Yahya Khan to set up a puppet regime.”
Mr. Yahya Khan had made it clear that he would if he could punish those of the National Assembly members who were guilty of “crimes” (of fighting for freedom) and that others could be pardoned. That is his signal for injecting treachery.
The delegation spokesman said: “Our Prime Minister has already declared that the betrayers of the freedom struggle will be punished, and their only punishment is death.”
The delegation underlines: “Yahya Khan knows he is on the way out. He only expressed his weakness in his Press conference. His days are numbered.”
“Yes, we shall go on fighting for our freedom whatever the cost.” the spokesman added.
“What about the offer of amnesty by Yahya Khan?” he was asked. The spokesman replied: “We do not care what is offered by a man on whose hands is the blood of the people of Bangladesh. After all, who is he ? He is a President of a different country and not of Bangladesh.”
