HE Dr. Ram Baran Yadav Hon’ble President of Nepal

As a student in Calcutta Medical College, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav offered medical assistance to many sick and injured refugees in the different refugee camps. He along with his team gave immense support to the cause of our Liberation War. For his contribution in our Liberation War, H E Dr. Ram Baran Yadav is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour.

His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck The Third King of Bhutan

His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk gave all out support to the people of Bangladesh during the Liberation War in 1971. He gave financial and other necessary support at that time. For his great contribution in our Liberation War, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev Former Hon’ble Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union

For significant contribution and support to the Liberation War in Bangladesh, as the Secretary General of the then Communist Party of the Soviet Union and as Chairman of Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Nikolai Viktorovich Podgorny Former Hon’ble Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Soviet Union

During our Liberation War, Nikolai Viktorovich Podgorny contributed in developing diplomatic relations in favour of Bangladesh. He helped in foiling the conspiracies of nations working against the Liberation War. For his significant contribution, Nikolai Viktorovich Podgorny is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin Former Hon’ble Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Soviet Union

As the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Soviet Union, Alexi Nikolayevich Kosygin helped India with arms and ammunitions for Bangladesh Liberation War. He also opposed US policy which favoured Pakistan against Bangladesh Liberation War. For his all out support and significant contribution in bringing success to Bangladesh Liberation War, Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Marshal Josip Broz Tito Former Hon’ble President of Yugoslavia

Marshal Josip Broz Tito extended his support to the people of Bangladesh who suffered torture and genocide at the hands of the Pakistani regime. He was very vocal in his support to the Freedom Fighters and the Liberation War of Bangladesh. As the leader of the Non-Aligned Movement, he was the supporter for National Independence and his support helped Bangladesh gaining recognition from Third World countries. For his great contribution towards the Independence of Bangladesh, Marshal Josip Broz Tito is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Sir Edward Richard George Heath Former Hon’ble Prime Minister of UK

Sir Edward Heath, Britain’s Prime Minister at the time of the Liberation War sent message to President Yahya Khan to stop genocide in Bangladesh. He also delivered speeches in the Parliament against Pakistani military operation in Bangladesh. He provided a warm welcome to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in London on way to Bangladesh just after release from prison in Pakistan in January 1972. For his great contribution towards the Independence of Bangladesh, Sir Edward Richard George Heath is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala Former Hon’ble Prime Minister of Nepal

During our Liberation War in 1971 a staunch believer in democracy and a political leader Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala gave all out support to Bangladesh. He took measures against genocide and the killing of innocents in Bangladesh and worked closely with the Indian government to help the people of Bangladesh. As a mark of his contribution in our Liberation War, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

People of India

The People of Bangladesh remember with deep and sincere gratitude the kindness and support provided by the People of India for about ten million refugees during our Liberation War. The People of India provided refugees with shelter, food, clothing and all out support to the Freedom Fighters in favour of Liberation War. On behalf of the People of Bangladesh, the People of India are awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Mitra Bahini

The Mitra Bahini is recognized for providing training, arms, ammunition and combat tactics to our Freedom Fighters. They fought side by side with our Freedom Fighters and a large number of officers and soldiers of Mitra Bahini sacrificed their lives during our Liberation War. All members of the Mitra Bahini are remembered with gratitude for their great contribution and awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Sachindra Lal Singh Former Hon’ble Chief Minister, Tripura, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Sachindra Lal Singh was the Chief Minister of the Indian State of Tripura. He provided shelter to the millions of refugees in his State. He played a lead-role in the political campaign in favour of the Liberation War and provided assistance to the Political Leaders and Freedom Fighters. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Shri Sachindra Lal Singh is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Siddhartha Shankar Ray Former Hon’ble Minister, India

Shri Siddhartha Shankar Ray, a great friend of the people of Bangladesh, who as a member of the Central Cabinet and as Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s special representative for the refugees, took up permanent residence in West Bengal and personally coordinated the relief efforts. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Shri Siddhartha Shankar Ray is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Purno Agitok Sangma Former Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, India Sree Purno Agitok Sangma provided all out help to the Freedom Fighters from Bangladesh in 1971 by creating local volunteer groups and by giving the refugees moral and material support. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Shri Purno Agitok Sangma is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Justice Syed Sadat Abul Masud Padma Bhushan Former Hon’ble Justice, Kolkata High Court, India

Justice Syed Sadat Abul Masud Padma Bhushan provided all out support to the refugees from Bangladesh and contributed greatly in building public awareness and sympathy for the Liberation War. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War Justice Syed Sadat Abul Masud Padma Bhushan is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Rajmata Bibhu Kumari Devi Former Hon’ble Minister, Tripura, India Rajmata Bibhu Kumari Devi of Tripura opened the gates of her palace in Tripura for the refugees from Bangladesh. She ran a campaign for building up a mass awareness about the condition of the people in Bangladesh. For presenting the correct information and for working for the cause of the Liberation War, Rajmata Bibhu Kumari Devi is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Dilip Chakraborty Professor and Writer, India

Shri Dilip Chakraborty, as the Secretary of the Kolkata University Shahayak Samity, contributed greatly in helping the refugees, and for launching an all-India, as well as, an international campaign for supporting the cause of the Bangladesh Liberation War. For his great contribution in our Liberation War, Shri Dilip Chakraborty is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Debdulal Bandyopadhaya News Caster, All India Radio and Doordarshan, India During our Liberation War, the emotional and rich voice of Shri Debdulal Bandyopadhaya on the radio waves, kept alive the hopes of millions of people both in besieged Bangladesh, as well as, in the refugee camps as he read out the news and Shangbad Parikrama every night. For his great contribution towards the Liberation of Bangladesh, Shri Debdulal Bandyopadhaya is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Pandit Ravi Shankar Bharat Ratna World Famous Musician and Composer, India Pandit Ravi Shankar, who motivated a group of dedicated artists including George Harrison of the Beatles group organised the famous ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ in Madison Square in New York and raised about 3.5 million dollars and donated it to the UNESCO Fund for helping the refugees. He also worked to build world opinion in favour of the cause of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Pandit Ravi Shankar Bharat Ratna is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Sursamrat Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Padma Vibhushan World Famous Musician, India

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, one of the organizers of the ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ in Madison Square in New York with Pandit Ravi Shankar and George Harrison, raised fund for the cause of the refugees. He also worked for obtaining international support for the cause of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. For his remarkable support and contribution to our Liberation War, Sursamrat Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Padma Vibhushan is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Annada Shankar Roy Poet and Writer, India

As the Chairman of Bangladesh Assistance Committee, Shri Annada Shankar Roy contributed greatly in creating public opinion in favour of Liberation War of Bangladesh. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Shri Annada Shankar Roy is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shrimati Arundhati Ghose Ambassador, India

During the Liberation War, Shrimati Arundhati Ghose acted on behalf of the Indian Government and provided support and help to the Bangladesh Government in foreign land. She also played a very important role in providing with necessities to the refugee camps. As a sign of gratitude for her contribution Shrimati Arundhati Ghose is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Bhupen Hazarika Padma Vibhushan Lyricist, Musician, Singer, Poet and Film Maker, India

Shri Bhupen Hazarika Padma Vibhushan inspired and motivated our Freedom Fighters through rendering patriotic songs. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Shri Bhupen Hazarika Padma Vibhushan is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Barrister Subrata Roy Chowdhury Lawyer and Writer, India Barrister Subrata Roy Chowdhury, a renowned lawyer, helped Bangladesh with the implementation of the Declaration of Independence and with the formation of the Lawyers Forum in Calcutta High Court to support and help the Liberation War. For his great contribution towards our Liberation War, Barrister Subrata Roy Chowdhury is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Field Marshal S HFJ Manekshaw Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Military Cross Former Chief of Army Staff, Indian Army Field Marshal S H FJ Manekshaw Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Military Cross provided all round support with the military operations, with the formation of the Mukti Bahini, training, formation of the Joint Forces and with the final onslaught in Dhaka till the surrender of General Niazi of Pakistan Army and his troops to the Joint Forces. For his lead role in our final victory, Field Marshal S H FJ Manekshaw Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Lieutenant General (Retd) Jack Frederick Ralph Jacob Commendation of Merit, PVSM Former Chief of Staff of Eastern Command, Indian Army As the Chief of Staff of Eastern Command, India, Lieutenant General (Retd) Jack Frederick Ralph Jacob, Commendation of Merit, PVSM, helped with the formation of the Mukti Bahini, planning of the war and in preparing the documents for surrender of the Pakistan Army to the Joint Forces. For his remarkable role in our final victory, Lieutenant General (Retd) Jack Frederick Ralph Jacob is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Manik Sarker Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tripura, India During our Liberation War, Shri Manik Sarker contributed greatly as a young student leader. He had formed the Shwecchashebak organization to help the refugees with food, shelter, medical treatment and other humanitarian needs. For such great contribution towards our Liberation War, Shri Manik Sarker is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Ishwari Prasad Gupta Former Chief Secretary, Tripura, India During the Liberation War, Shri Ishwari Prasad Gupta provided the refugees from Bangladesh with shelter, food, medical treatment and other necessary help in Tripura State. As the then Chief Secretary, he helped the people of Bangladesh with utmost sincerity. For his great contribution in towards our Liberation War, Shri Ishwari Prasad Gupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Dr. Rathin Datta Padmashree Former Surgeon Superintendent, G.B. Hospital, Tripura, India

As the Surgeon Superintendent in Agartala Government Hospital (G.B. Hospital) Dr. Rathin Datta Padmashree, not only treated the injured Freedom Fighters but also helped the ordinary refugees and thus made tremendous contribution to our Liberation War. Dr. Rathin Datta Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Begum Rawshan Ara Begum Sangma Teacher and Social Worker, Meghalaya, India During the Liberation War, Begum Rawshan Ara Begum Sangma provided her own land to set up shelter for the refugee camps in Ampati in the West Garo hills. She organized nursing and treatment to the refugees during an epidemic in the refugee camp which saved many lives. For her kindness and remarkable support to homeless refugees, Begum Rawshan Ara Begum Sangma is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Dasharath Dev Burman Former Hon’ble Chief Minister, Tripura, India

During the Liberation War, as the Adivasi leader of Tripura, Shri Dasharath Dev Burman provided shelter to countless refugees from Bangladesh. He also helped the Mukti Bahini in every possible manner. For his great contribution, Shri Dasharath Dev Burman is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Durga Prasad Dhar Former Political Adviser to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India At a crucial stage of the Liberation War, Shri Durga Prasad Dhar played the lead role in signing of the Indo-Soviet Friendship Treaty. He played a pivotal role in favour of Bangladesh to get international support. For his great contribution, Shri Durga Prasad Dhar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Major General S.S. Uban PVSM, AVSM Trainer and Organizer of Mujib Bahini, Indian Army Major General S.S. Uban PVSM, AVSM not only gave training to the Freedom Fighters but also helped them with arms and ammunitions. For his acts of bravery and courage in battles fought in Chittagong Hill Tracts and in Chittagong, Major General S.S. Uban PVSM, AVSM is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri P. N. Haksar Former Chief Secretary to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India During the Liberation War in 1971, Shri P. N. Haksar worked on behalf of the Government of India to make all out effort to help materialize and support the Bangladesh Government in every possible manner. For his great contribution to our Liberation War, Shri P. N. Haksar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Dr Karan Singh Former Hon’ble Minister of India

Dr Karan Singh worked on behalf of the Indian Government to promote public opinion and better understanding with the people and Government of India. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Dr Karan Singh is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Sardar Swaran Singh Former Hon’ble Foreign Minister of India

As the Foreign Minister of India, Sardar Swaran Singh had made great contribution in the field of diplomacy. As a gesture of his contribution to raise diplomatic sympathy and awareness in our Liberation War, Sardar Swaran Singh is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Angshuman Roy Singer and Composer, India

His song ‘Shono Ekti Mujiborer Theke’ was first played on 13 April 1971 from Akashbani. This song played a great role to inspire and provide mental and moral strength to people of Bangladesh throughout the Liberation War. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Shri Angshuman Roy is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Andrei Andreevich Gromyko Former Hon’ble Foreign Minister, Soviet Union During the Liberation War, Andrei Andreevich Gromyko called for a stop to the genocide in Bangladesh and took diplomatic measures to create sympathy for the suffering people of Bangladesh. For taking wise steps that created worldwide awareness about the existing problem in Bangladesh, Andrei Andreevich Gromyko is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Yakov Alexandrovich Malik Parmanent Representative to the United Nations, Soviet Union

During the crucial period of the Liberation War, Yakov Alexandrovich Malik was the permanent representative of the Soviet Union in the United Nations. For his diplomatic leadership and the timely decision to veto resolutions to be taken against the interest of Bangladesh at the United Nations, Yakov Alexandrovich Malik is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Vladimir Stanis Professor and Social Worker, Soviet Union

By arranging various forums and seminars, the economist Vladimir Stanis continued to create sympathy and opinion in favour of the Liberation War in Bangladesh. As a mark of recognition for his contribution in our Liberation War, Vladimir Stanis is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Nikolai Firyubin Deputy Foreign Minister, Soviet Union For his great contribution in carrying out diplomatic actions in favour of Bangladesh, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the former Soviet Union, Nikolai Firyubin is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Anatoly Dobrinin Former Ambassador, Soviet Union For contributing greatly in the diplomatic arena during the Liberation War in favour of Bangladesh, Anatoly Dobrinin is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Rear Admiral Sergei Pavlovich Zuenko and His Team, Soviet Union Mr. Anatoly V. Sokolov Mr. Konstantin I. Suslikov

In the post Liberation period of the war ravaged Bangladesh, Rear Admiral Sergei Zuenko and his team could successfully make the Chittagong Port operational within a very short time. A young Soviet sailor had lost his life while working on this difficult mission. For his contribution in helping Bangladesh mobilize and regain economic structure, Rear Admiral Sergei Pavlovich Zuenko and his team is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Pjotr Kirillowitsch Koschewoi Former Marshal Soviet Union

During the Liberation War, Pjotr Kirillowitsch Koschewoi was the Marshal of the Soviet Union. He contributed by preparing his forces for any eventuality which could have taken place during the last phase of the War when the 7th fleet was moving into the Bay of Bengal. For his support to the cause of Bangladesh, Pjotr Kirillowitsch Koschewoi is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Richard K Taylor Social worker and Human Rights Activist, USA

During the Liberation War, Richard K Taylor, as the Head of Peace Initiative, created agitation with his team of followers when the ship ‘Padma’ loaded with arms and ammunitions tried to anchor in Kevington Port and was arrested there. He helped in creating mass opinion against US help to supply arms to Pakistan. For his contribution and role in banning arms supply to Pakistan, Richard K Taylor is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Anna Braun Taylor Social Worker, USA

Anna Braun Taylor was a dedicated member of the Bangladesh Information Center set up in support of the Bangladesh Liberation War in Boston. She initiated agitation, went on hunger strike and gave statements in favour of Bangladesh and against the genocide. For her contribution during our Liberation War, Anna Braun Taylor is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Archer K. Blood Former US Consul General in Dhaka and Writer, USA Archer K. Blood was the US Consul in Bangladesh during 1971. He witnessed the gruesome killings on the 25 March night. He was the first diplomat to communicate about the genocide through diplomatic wire to the US policy makers. For his stand against the barbaric Pakistan regime and its atrocities, Archer K. Blood is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Lear Levin Film Director, Photographer and TV Journalist, USA Lear Levin, the American film maker, created documentaries on the genocide and atrocities that was being committed by the Pakistani Army. He documented inhuman conditions and sufferings of the refugees in the camps and sent important information about the incidents during our Liberation War to the outside world. As a mark of recognition for his contribution to our Liberation War, Lear Levin is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Father Richard William Timm Human Rights Activist and Teacher, USA

Father Richard William Timm helped the Mukti Bahini secretly during the Liberation War. He tried to create public opinion in the world by sending secret reports of the torture and genocide in Bangladesh. For this humanitarian gesture, Father Richard William Timm is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr. Joseph Garst Orthopedic Surgeon and Social Worker, USA The renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joseph Garst dedicated his life to serving the helpless and the downtrodden. He provided medical service to the sick and injured people of Bangladesh in the refugee camps during our Liberation War. In the post Liberation period, Dr. Joseph Garst set an unparallel example of humanitarian service in Bangladesh by giving medical service to the injured Freedom Fighters and by rehabilitating them. In 1999, the Government of Bangladesh granted him citizenship. For his humanitarian service to the people of Bangladesh, Dr. Joseph Garst is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Senator Frank Forrester Church Former Hon’ble Senator and Lawyer, USA

As a member of the US Senate Relations Committee, Senator Frank Forrester Church, voiced his opinion against genocide, killings and torture in Bangladesh carried out by the Pakistan regime during the Liberation War in 1971. He was vocal during Senate meetings about implementing US economic sanctions and creating arms ban on Pakistan. As a mark of respect for his role and contribution during our Liberation War, Senator Frank Forrester Church is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Dr William Greenough Professor and Social Worker, USA Dr William Greenough and his co-workers set up the ‘Bangladesh Information Center’ during our Liberation war in 1971 and circulated information to the world about the genocide in Bangladesh. He arranged seminars to raise public opinion in favour of the Liberation War in Bangladesh and shared information about the existing situation in Bangladesh with the rest of the world. For his great contribution in our Liberation War, Dr William Greenough is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Edward C. Dimock Junior Professor and Social Worker, USA Professor Edward C. Dimock Jr of the University of Chicago made strong statements at the Bangladesh Conference in Washington and in several forums and seminars in 1971. He repeatedly urged the US President to stop economic and other support to Pakistan. For taking a strong stand against crimes against humanity and for his contribution in creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh Liberation War, Professor Edward C. Dimock Jr is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

David Weisbroad Human Rights Activist, USA

During our Liberation War, David Wiesbroad was an administrator of Bangladesh Information Center. He made immense contribution in creating public opinion among the American citizens in favour of the Liberation War in Bangladesh. He played an important role in the background in getting the Saxby-Church Resolution accepted in the US Senate. As a mark of respect for his contribution in our Liberation War, David Wiesbroad is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Senator William B. Saxbe Former Hon’ble Senator and Diplomat, USA

Senator William B. Saxbe repeatedly raised the issue of genocide and democratic struggle at Senate meetings. It was due to Senator William Saxbe and Senator Frank Church’s proposal and acceptance of the Resolution, that the US Government was forced to impose arms sanction on Pakistan. For his role in making US Government stop sending arms to Pakistan during our Liberation War, Senator William B. Saxbe is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Congressman Cornelius Edward Gallagher Hon’ble Congressman, USA During the Liberation War, as a Congressman of USA, he repeatedly briefed the Congress on the atrocities being committed in Bangladesh by Pakistan Army. He also helped create public opinion in USA and abroad in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution in our Liberation War, Congressman Cornelius Edward Gallagher is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shaheed Father William P Evans Social Worker, USA

Father William P Evans, the great humanitarian, priest, social worker and educationist was residing in Bangladesh during the Liberation War. He extended help to the hapless and suffering people with food, shelter and medical treatment. He helped the injured Freedom Fighters by providing them shelter and medical treatment. On 13 November, 1971, Pakistani soldiers inhumanly tortured and killed him in Nababganj Ghat at the bank of the river Icchamati. As a token of gratitude to this great man for helping the people of Bangladesh and for embracing martyrdom, Shaheed Father William P Evans is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

John Kenneth Galbraith Diplomat, Economist and Social Worker, USA

A diplomat, economist and a social worker, John Kenneth Galbraith helped create public opinion in USA and abroad in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution in our Liberation War, John Kenneth Galbraith is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Reverend Father Eugine Homerich CSC Social Worker, USA

Lord Peter David Shore Former Hon’ble Minister and Politician, UK

Lord Peter David Shore was a member of the British Parliament during our Liberation War. He was a strong exponent in the British Parliament for the cause of Bangladesh. He repeatedly voiced his opinion against the torture and genocide carried out by the Pakistan Army. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Lord Peter David Shore is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Michael Barnes CBE Former Hon’ble Member of Parliament, UK

Michael Barnes, a British politician, was a member of the British Parliament during our Liberation War in 1971. He presented a resolution to the British Parliament for cancellation of the visit to UK by the Pakistan Cricket Team. As a mark of recognition for his role as a friend outside and inside the British Parliament, Michael Barnes CBE is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Simon Dring Journalist, Television Presenter and Director, UK

Simon Dring was working in Bangladesh as the correspondent for The Daily Telegraph in March 1971. He was the first person to inform the world about the atrocities and the reign of terror unleashed by the Pakistan Army on the people of Bangladesh on the night of 25 March. Through several forums, seminars and publications he presented to the people of the world the condition that prevailed here. For presenting the correct information and for working for the cause of the Liberation War, Simon Dring is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Bruce Douglas-Mann Former Hon’ble Member of Parliament, UK During our Liberation War, Bruce Douglas-Mann was a member of the Labour Party in the British Parliament. He raised issues about the condition in Bangladesh and justified the cause of the Liberation War in the Parliament. Having visited the bordering areas and the refugee camps himself, he saw the gravity of the situation and raised issues in the British Parliament for the British Government to stop economic and moral support to the Pakistan military regime. For his selfless support to the cause of Bangladesh, Bruce Douglas-Mann is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Julian Francis Social Worker, UK

During the Liberation War, Julian Francis was appointed by OXFAM as coordinator of relief programme in the refugee camp of Assam, Tripura and West Bengal where he made remarkable contribution. He also played a key role in preparing the powerful OXFAM document Testimony of Sixty’ which played a significant role in forming world opinion against genocide. He is still associated with organizations that work for the betterment of the poor people of the Char areas in independent Bangladesh. A devout volunteer for helping Bangladesh in its development activities, Julian Francis is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Biman Mullick Artist, Designer and Professor, UK During the Liberation War, the Government of Mujibnagar decided to issue postal tickets in order to draw attention of the outside world to Bangladesh. Professor and an artist Shri Biman Mullick prepared the design of the first eight postal tickets. He did not charge any remuneration. For such great gesture towards our Liberation War, Shri Biman Mullick is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Takashi Hayakawa Former Hon’ble Member of Parliament and Social Worker, Japan Takashi Hayakawa played a leading role in raising public awareness and support for the people of Bangladesh against the killing, torture and genocide carried out by the Pakistan regime. He was an active member of Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Society and Solidarity Front. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Takashi Hayakawa is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Tsuyoshi Nara Professor, Japan Tsuyoshi Nara was an active member of Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Society in 1971. The Society office was set up in the house of Tsuyoshi Nara. The Society collected money which was handed over to Red Cross for Bangladeshi refugees. In 1974 on the invitation of Bangabandhu, Tsuyoshi Nara joined as a Professor in the Institute of Modern Language of Dhaka University. For such a great gesture towards our Liberation War, Tsuyoshi Nara is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Takayoshi Suzuki Social Worker, Japan

Takayoshi Suzuki was an active member of Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Society. He visited the bordering refugee camps and at his return to Japan, procured a microbus and began to collect money and relief goods for the refugees. For his role and contribution towards our Liberation War, Takayoshi Suzuki is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Naoaki Usui Journalist and Social Worker, Japan

Naoaki Usui, a Japanese journalist travelled to border areas during the Liberation War of Bangladesh to collect first hand information about the existing situation prevailing in Bangladesh. He let the world know about the killing, torture and genocide taking place inside Bangladesh. He visited several battle fields to collect news about the Liberation War. As a mark of recognition for his role and contribution in our Liberation War, Naoaki Usui is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shrimati Barbara Dasgupta Social Worker and Writer, Germany Shrimati Barbara Dasgupta resided in East Germany with her husband Shri Sunil Dasgupta when the Liberation War in 1971 was going on. The couple initiated several measures in favour of the Liberation War in Bangladesh. In June 1971, they had arranged a cultural programme to collect fund for the refugees. They were successful in getting the support of the Socialist Unity Party of East Germany towards the cause of the Liberation War in Bangladesh. They provided all out support for the treatment of the injured Freedom Fighters. For her sincere support and contribution to our Liberation War, Shrimati Barbara Dasgupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Sunil Dasgupta Social Worker and Writer, Germany Shri Sunil Dasgupta and his wife Shrimati Barbara Dasgupta made immense contribution to our Liberation War in 1971 when they were residing in Berlin in East Germany. They initiated several projects to raise funds to support the people of Bangladesh. In June 1971, they had arranged a cultural programme and collected fund to support the refugees. He and his wife played a big role in making the Socialist Unity Party of East Germany to support our Liberation War. They both specially provided support for the injured Freedom Fighters’ treatment. For his role and contribution in our Liberation War, Shri Sunil Dasgupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Sean MacBride Former Hon’ble Foreign Minister and Human Rights Activist, Ireland Sean MacBride supported the cause of the Bangladesh Liberation War. He took initiative to defend Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was under custody of Pakistan Government. But on arrival to Rawalpindi, he was turned back by Pakistan authorities. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Sean MacBride is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Barrister Nora Shariff Social Worker and Political Leader, Ireland

Before the Liberation War started, Barrister Nora Shariff was involved in the 6 points movement of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She distributed leaflets, organized seminars on 6 points programme of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Ireland to make Bangalee population aware of it. During the Liberation War, she provided assistance to Bangladesh Government. For her great contribution in our Liberation War, Barrister Nora Shariff is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Gunnar Myrdal Professor and Social Worker, Sweden Gunnar Myrdal was the Chairman of Bangladesh Action Committee in Sweden during our Liberation War in 1971. With his help and sincere effort public opinion in Sweden was created in favour of our Liberation War. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Gunnar Myrdal is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shaheed Father Mario Veronice Religious Preacher and Social Worker, Italy

During the Liberation War, Father Mario Veronice was working in the Simulia Christian Mission, Jessore. He devoted himself in treating and nursing war victims in Jessore Chiristian Mission. Pakistan Army entered the Sisters Convent of Jessore and killed the Father and 6 Christians. As recognition to his contribution and sacrifice, Shaheed Father Mario Veronice is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Dr Kirsten Westergaard Human Rights Activist, Denmark

Dr Kirsten Westergaard was the Chairman of the Bangladesh Action Committee in Denmark. She was present in Dhaka on the fateful night of 25 March, 1971 and witnessed the killings, torture and genocide unleashed by the barbaric Pakistan regime over the innocent people of Bangladesh. Through regular press conferences and news bulletins she made the Danish public aware of the genocide carried out in Bangladesh. For her great contribution to our Liberation War, Dr Kirsten Westergaard is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Andre Malraux Former Hon’ble Minister and Novelist, France

During the Liberation War, Andre Malraux strongly supported Bangladesh Liberation War. He convened press conferences in favour of Bangladesh. He wrote newspaper columns against genocide in Bangladesh. For his remarkable support and contribution towards our Liberation War, Andre Malraux is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Oxfam

Men, women and children were crossing the border to India in search of safer shelter during our Liberation War in 1971. It was a big challenge to provide this sea of refugees with food, clothing, shelter and medical treatment. Oxfam with other such organizations run by volunteers came to the support of India to tackle these crises. For its role and contribution to our Liberation War, Oxfam is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) During the genocide unleashed by the Pakistan regime in Bangladesh, more than ten million people went to India after the border in search of safer shelter. The UNHCR came immediately to offer help and support to the refugees in the camps and they attained success too. For its great role and contribution towards our Liberation War, UNHCR is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

ICRC was one such organization that came forward to provide support to the refugees who were fleeing their homes in search of safer shelter after the barbaric acts of killings, torture and genocide was unleashed by the Pakistan regime. Many inside Bangladesh were also victims of genocide, rape and torture. ICRC is among one of the few organizations that came forward to provide help to the distressed. For its role and contribution in our Liberation War, ICRC is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)

In spite of restrictions imposed on the BBC about transferring news abroad, BBC continued to broadcast news about torture, killings and genocide to the outside world. As a result, the world was well informed about the situation in Bangladesh during our Liberation War and thus public support was spreading fast. The news and news commentary broadcast from BBC was a great source of information and inspiration to the people of Bangladesh. For its great contribution and positive role during our Liberation War, BBC is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Akashbani (All India Radio)

In 1971, the people of Bangladesh looked upon Akashbani as the source of all information and inspiration. It broadcast news about the battles, inspiring programmes which included songs, dramas etc. For its great contribution during our Liberation War, Akashbani is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Calcutta University Shahayak Samity During Liberation War, the Samity collected fund from teachers and students of Calcutta University and other schools and colleges. The fund collected were utilized to purchase food, medicine etc. which were distributed in the refugee camps. The members of the Samiti also worked as volunteer in the refugee camps. For its role and contribution in our Liberation War, Calcutta University Shahayak Samity is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

During the Liberation War, Shri I. K. Gujral was a member of Shrimati Indira Gandhi’s Cabinet. He was actively engaged in taking decisions by the Indian Government in favour of the Liberation War. He supported the cause of Bangladesh during discussions in the Lok Sabha. He constantly helped the Freedom Fighters and also ensured distribution of relief materials among the refugees living in the camps. For his great contribution to the Liberation War, Shri I. K. Gujral is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour.

Shri Girija Prasad Koirala Former Prime Minister, Nepal

Congress Leader Shri Girija Prasad Koirala entered the liberated areas of Bangladesh in the month of May in 1971 to demonstrate support to the just cause of Bangladesh. He met the Freedom Fighters in the battle fields and provided moral support to them. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Girija Prasad Koirala is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Sashanka S Banerjee Diplomat, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Sashanka S Banerjee was an officer of the High Commission of India in UK. He was an untiring voice against the genocide committed by Pakistan Army in Bangladesh. In the diplomatic circle of UK, he pursued different countries to support Bangladesh. He encouraged and assisted Bangladeshis in UK to continue their movement for freedom. After release of Bangabandhu from Pakistan prison, he accompanied him in the flight from London to Dhaka via New Delhi. For his great contribution, Shri Sashanka S Banerjee is awarded the Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Mme Nguyen Thi Binh Leader of the National Liberation Front of Former South Vietnam, Vietnam

Mme Nguyen Thi Binh was the leader of the National Liberation Front and Director of Special Project Implementation of former South Vietnam. She, on behalf of the Front undertook diplomatic efforts in favour of Bangladesh in international forum. For her great contribution in the Liberation War, Mme Nguyen Thi Binh is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Dilip Chakraborty Journalist, India

During the Liberation War, after knowing about the genocide unleashed by the Pakistan Army, Shri Dilip Chakraborty visited the bordering areas and collected news on the war risking his life. Through his articles and reports, he brought to light the harrowing atrocities committed by Pakistan Army and the bravery of the Freedom Fighters. His book titled ‘Ekattorer Ratdin’ reveals the unknown stories of tumultuous days of 1971. In recognition of his remarkable contribution, Shri Dilip Chakraborty is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

During the Liberation War, Anthony Laurence Clifton was a reporter of ‘Newsweek’. His reports bore testimony to the operations of Freedom Fighters and the genocide by Pakistan Army. Through his writings he informed people worldwide about the situation in Bangladesh. In June 1971, he visited the refugee camps and published factual reports which helped create public opinion. For his great contribution in the Liberation War, Anthony Laurence Clifton is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Narayan Desai Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Narayan Desai helped the refugees by organizing widespread support of the organizations that believed in the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. He arranged and led the ‘Road March to Delhi’ in support of Bangladesh. For his noble contribution, Shri Narayan Desai is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Joan A. Dine Social Worker, USA

From the earliest days of the Liberation War, Joan A. Dine, along with her husband Thomas A. Dine, was active in support of Bangladesh. When the Bangladesh Information Centre was established in Washington DC in 1971 to mobilize public and political support in the US for Bangladesh, she voluntarily worked for the centre virtually on a full time basis. In this task, she not only played an active role in preparing material and briefing Bangladeshi and US campaigners for the passage of the Saxby-Church Amendment to stop USAID to Pakistan, but also took part in public demonstrations in support of Bangladesh where she took along with her one-year old daughter Amy Dine. For her remarkable contribution in the Liberation War, Joan A. Dine is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Thomas A. Dine Politician and Social Worker, USA

Thomas A. Dine was the companion of the famous US Senator Frank Church during our Liberation War. For his successful efforts in stopping US economic and military support to Pakistan, for helping the refugees, for creating public opinion throughout the world and trying to save the life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Thomas A. Dine is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Manosh Ghosh Journalist, India

As a journalist of the ‘Statesman’ of West Bengal, Shri Manosh Ghosh published various reports which helped in reflecting the true picture of Liberation War. In the document titled ‘Dateline Bangladesh’ published in June 1971 from Bombay, his reports were included. Through these reports, the readers were made aware of the miseries of our people and the gallant actions of Freedom Fighters. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Manosh Ghosh is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Afzal Hossain Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Janab Afzal Hossain conducted relief work in the refugee camps of Dauki, Balat, and Pamchutia with his own fund. He played a leading role as a member of Bangladesh Assistance Committee formed in Shillong. As a chairperson of the Dead Body Burial Committee of Shillong he buried Shaheed Freedom Fighters and refugees at his own cost. He and his brother Janab Ahammad Hossain are still maintaining the graves of the Freedom Fighters at the Moprem graveyard. Besides, he extended support and assistance to the wounded Freedom Fighters and refugees at different hospitals. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Janab Afzal Hossain is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Ahammad Hossain Photographer and Social Worker, India During the Liberation War, Janab Ahammad Hossain conducted relief work in the refugee camps of Dauki, Balat and Pamchutia with his own fund. He played a leading role as member of Bangladesh Assistance Committee formed in Shillong. He was the Motawalli of the Moprem graveyard donated by his forefather Golam Haider Mollah where he buried 52 Shaheed Freedom Fighters and is still maintaining their graves. He entered Bangladesh and took many photographs and sent it to different media for publication. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Janab Ahammad Hossain is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

During the Liberation War, Shri Hiranmoy Karlekar was a journalist of the Daily Statesman. Shrimati Anjali Lahiri Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Shrimati Anjali Lahiri collected funds and arranged distribution of relief in refugee camps. She was frequently seen in refugee camps in Cherapunji and Meghalaya areas. She used to distribute relief materials in the training and operational camps of Freedom Fighters in Bashtala, Tamabil, Mailam, etc. Freedom Fighters used to address her as ‘Jagot Ma’ (Universal Mother). For her remarkable contribution to the Liberation War, Shrimati Anjali Lahiri is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Lars Leijonborg Politician and Human Rights Activist, Sweden During the Liberation War, Lars Leijonborg visited the liberated areas of Bangladesh and after witnessing the sufferings of the refugees he highlighted the issues in the Swedish media and made efforts to create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. He appealed to the Swedish Government to stop aid to Pakistan. He repeatedly urged them to withdraw the Swedish Ambassador from Pakistan. For his strong support to the Liberation War, Lars Leijonborg is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Ashok Mitra Politician and Economist, India During the Liberation War, renowned economist Dr Ashok Mitra had been active in support of the war from behind the scene. With help of politicians and economists, he organized support for the cause of Bangladesh’s liberation by utilizing his contacts with Shrimati Indira Gandhi’s Government. He is a much-admired person among the Freedom Fighters. For his remarkable support and contribution, Dr Ashok Mitra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Pankaj Saha Journalist, India Shri Pankaj Saha was a young journalist of Akashbani Kolkata during the Liberation War. He reported on the maiden flag hoisting ceremony in Bangladesh Mission, Kolkata and the historical event of return of Bangabandhu from Pakistan prison. He played an important role in conducting proliberation programmes in Akashbani along with Bangladesh Betar artists in exile. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Pankaj Saha is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Captain (Retd) M. N. R Samant Maha Vir Chakra Indian Navy, India During the Liberation War, Captain M. N. R Samant played a key role in training the Bangladeshi naval commandoes and prepared them for operation. He took personal risks in coordinating and guiding the naval commandoes for dangerous missions in the occupied areas of Bangladesh. In recognition of his contribution, the Indian Government awarded him Maha Vir Chakra. For his remarkable support and contribution, Captain (Retd) M. N. Shri Tarun Sanyal Journalist and Professor, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Tarun Sanyal as the member of the editorial board of the newspaper ‘Parichoy’ regularly wrote in support of Liberation War. He addressed a meeting arranged by the Communist Party, Kolkata district committee in March, 1971 which was the first public meeting held in support of Bangladesh. The office of ‘Parichoy’ newspaper became the meeting place of all the writers, artists, professors and intellectuals from Bangladesh. He extended his full support and assistance to the Bangladeshi intellectuals. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Tarun Sanyal is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Pabitra Sarkar Educationalist, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Pabitra Sarkar took the initiative to organize various meetings and cultural programmes along with Bangladeshis such as architect Dr Fazlur Rahman and Professor Shamsul Bari of Chicago University and raised funds for Bangladesh Government. The collected money was sent for purchase of materials like rubber boat, communication equipment, flipper etc. for the Freedom Fighters. For his remarkable contribution in the Liberation War, Shri Pabitra Sarkar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Robin Sengupta Journalist and Photographer, India While the Liberation War was going on, Shri Robin Sengupta at his personal risk entered Bangladesh a number of times and took many photographs of the mass killings and torture of Pakistan Army and operations of the Mukti Bahini. During the nine months war, Shri Robin Sengupta documented photos of different battles and published them in different newspapers. These photographs helped in creating public opinion, awareness and sympathy towards the sufferings of the refugees and to the cause of the Liberation War. For his great contribution, Shri Robin Sengupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Brigadier (Retd) Sant Singh Maha Vir Chakra BAR, psc Indian Army, India

Brigadier Sant Singh was the Commander of F J Sector of the Indian Army during the Liberation War. He was involved in training of large number of Freedom Fighters. With 6 Bihar Regiment, 83 BSF Battalion and 15 thousand Freedom Fighters, he captured Haluaghat and advanced towards Mymensingh. After capturing Mymensingh he advanced towards Dhaka via Modhupur and reached Dhaka on 16 December before the surrender of the Pakistan Army. He always led his troops from the front. He had a warm and cordial relationship with the Freedom Fighters and they addressed him as ‘Babaji’. He was awarded Maha Vir Chakra for his gallant actions by the Indian Government. For his bravery and leadership, Brigadier (Retd) Sant Singh Maha Vir Chakra BAR, psc is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Sven Strömberg Journalist and Television Coordinator, Sweden

During the Liberation War, Sven Strömberg was the coordinator of the famous television programme ‘Aktuelt’. His compassionate and neutral reports on Liberation War helped create public awareness and sympathy towards the cause of the Liberation War in the Scandinavian countries. He visited liberated areas of Bangladesh and prepared reports on the success of the Freedom Fighters. He was present at the surrender ceremony of the Pakistan Army on 16 December 1971. He also visited the Rayerbazar killing ground, documented and published reports on the mass killings of the intellectuals. He adopted a war child and named him Joy – Nicholas Mojes Joy. For his great contribution, Sven Strömberg is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Col. (Retd) Ashok Tara Vir Chakra Indian Army, India

A valiant officer of the Indian Army, Major Ashok Tara was a Company Commander of 14 Guard Regiment and took part in the crucial battles of Dholoi, Gangasagar, Brahmanbaria and Bhairab in 1971. He was leading his troops from the front and was awarded Vir Chakra for his gallant actions. Even after the surrender of Pakistan Army, the confined family members of Bangabandhu, including Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib were not released. Pakistani soldiers were firing all around and were aggressive in action. Major Ashok Tara, ignoring a risk to his life, forced the Pakistani soldiers to surrender weapons and took over the security of Bangabandhu’s family. Later, Bangabandhu invited Major Ashok Tara to his residence and presented him gifts. For his great contribution, Col. (Retd) Ashok Tara Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Upen Tarafdar Cultural Activist, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Upen Tarafdar was the producer of the radio program ‘Shangbad Bichitra’ in Akashbani Kolkata. This programme inspired Bangladeshis and there was a large audience of programme. Through this radio programme, Upen Tarafdar created public opinion in favour of the Liberation War. He recorded numerous accounts of atrocities from different areas of Bangladesh and broadcasted them. He covered the historic moments of Mujibnagar Government’s oath taking ceremony, liberation of Jessore and surrender of Pakistan Army on 16 December, 1971. He vividly portrayed the incidents of the Liberation War in his book ‘Ekattorer Uttal Dinguli’. Sir William Mark Tully OBE, Padma Bhushan, Padmashree Journalist and Writer, UK

William Mark Tully, a correspondent for BBC was stationed in London when the Liberation War started. His reports and commentaries inspired the Freedom Fighters in the war front and the freedom seeking people of Bangladesh. Through his reports, the true picture of the war situation and the importance and justification of the Liberation War was made clear and this resulted in getting worldwide support for our struggle for freedom. For his great contribution in the Liberation War, Sir William Mark Tully OBE, Padma Bhushan, Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Mansur Ali Former Deputy Minister, Tripura, India During the Liberation War, Janab Mansur Ali was the Deputy Minister of the Government of Tripura. As the Minister for Relief, Settlement and Refugees, he was physically present in the refugee camps to supervise relief work. Many a times he was present in the areas around the Indian border to monitor the arrival of refugees and in the distribution of relief. For his immense contribution in handling the large influx of refugees, Janab Mansur Ali is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Begum Gouri Ayyub Professor and Social Worker, India During the Liberation War, Begum Gouri Ayyub and her friends repeatedly crossed the border and distributed medicine and food among Freedom Fighters, distressed people, children and women inside Bangladesh. At the town of Badu near Kolkata, she helped set up a shelter named ‘Khelaghar’ for the Bangladeshi orphans. In recognition of her remarkable contribution, Begum Gouri Ayyub is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Kaifi Azmi Padmashree Poet and Lyricist, India During the Liberation War, Janab Kaifi Azmi Padmashree, a film personality and poet helped in building public opinion amongst the people of India for the people of Bangladesh through his literary activities. For his remarkable support and contribution towards the Liberation War, Janab Kaifi Azmi Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Dipendranath Bandyopadhyay Author, Social Worker and Journalist, India

During the Liberation War, as an editor of the Daily Kalantar and Parichoy, Shri Dipendranath Bandyopadhyay established a close relationship with the Bangladeshi writers and artists. He set up a new section called ‘Bangla’ in the Daily Parichoy which published articles on Liberation War. As the Secretary of Bangladesh Shilpi-Shahittik Shahayak Samity, he organized programmes in support of the Liberation War in different places of India. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Dipendranath Bandyopadhyay is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Sibnath Banerjee Politician, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Sibnath Banerjee came forward in aid of the refugees sheltered in Kolkata. To mobilize international support for the Liberation War, Sibnath Banerjee travelled to Afghanistan as a representative of the Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity and spoke with the highest leadership there. Besides this, he also made efforts to present the Bangladesh crisis to the Kabul University teachers and the Afghanistan newspapers. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Sibnath Banerjee is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Anil Bhattacharya Journalist, India

During the Liberation War, the house of Shri Anil Bhattacharya was like a refugee camp. As the Agartala correspondent of ‘Jugantor’ and ‘Amritabazar Patrika’ published from Kolkata, he reported on valiant acts of the Freedom Fighters and the miserable plights of the refugees. Also as the Editor of a weekly newspaper called ‘Shamachar’, he regularly published news about Bangladesh. His own press ‘Impress’ was constantly engaged in publishing news about the situations in the war front throughout the nine months. For his great contribution, Shri Anil Bhattacharya is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Bhupen Datta Bhaumik Journalist, India

Shri Bhupen Datta Bhaumik was the proprietor and editor of a daily newspaper ‘Sambad’ in Agartala. He regularly published news about the Liberation War in his newspaper. Journalists, Freedom Fighters, intellectuals, student leaders and refugees from Bangladesh were regular visitors at his office in Jagannath Bari Road. He entered Bangladesh several times, collected important information on Liberation War and published them in his newspaper. By publishing news otherwise unknown, he was successful in creating public awareness and interest. For his great contribution, Shri Bhupen Datta Bhaumik is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Dr. Sisir Kumar Bose Physician, India A member of Netaji family, Dr. Sisir Kumar Bose set up a field hospital in the Bongaon border area for treatment of Freedom Fighters and refugees during the Liberation War. There he along with his colleagues, wife Krishna Bose and son Sugata Bose provided round the clock medical assistance to the wounded Freedom Fighters and refugees. For his remarkable humanitarian service, Dr. Sisir Kumar Bose is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Nirendranath Chakraverti Poet, India

As the Co-Chairman of the ‘Bangladesh Assistance Committee’, Shri Nirendranath Chakraverti contributed greatly in assisting the refugees from Bangladesh. Through this organization, they were also able to create public opinion in India and abroad in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Nirendranath Chakraverti is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Nripen Chakraverti Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Communist Party (Marxist), Tripura, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Nripen Chakraverti was the Leader of the Opposition and Secretary of Communist Party (Marxist), Tripura, India. He was involved in collecting relief materials from the Government, Members of Parliament and members of the public and distributing them in the refugee camps. He repeatedly raised demand in the Parliament for recognizing the Bangladesh Government. He also arranged public meetings in support of Bangladesh and created favourable public opinion. For his great contribution, Shri Nripen Chakraverti is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Donald Chesworth Politician, UK

British politician Donald Chesworth played a remarkable role in support of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. As the Chairman of an international organization named ‘War on Want’, Donald Chesworth, assisted the refugees and the Freedom Fighters throughout the nine months. He visited the refugee camps in the border areas to see the miseries and plight of the people. He kept in close touch with Acting President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He also collected a large quantity of relief materials at his own accord and sent them to the refugee camps. For the remarkable support and contribution towards the Liberation War, Donald Chesworth is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Dr. Geofrey Davis Physician, Australia

During the Liberation War, the benevolent physician Dr. Geofrey Davis came forward to the aid of the women who fell victim to atrocities of the Pakistan Army and their accomplices. He contributed greatly by providing medical treatment to the distressed women and rehabilitated war babies. After independence, he was appointed as the Director of a Project titled ‘Bangladesh Rehabilitation Programme’ funded by London-based organization “Population Service International’ to assist the distressed women of Bangladesh. Dr. Davis worked for the establishment of clinics and within the shortest possible time trained a group of skilled paramedics. He collected numerous accounts of the atrocities committed during the Liberation War and published research papers/articles in international journals. In recognition of his remarkable contribution, Dr. Geofrey Davis is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shrimati Maitreyi Devi Novelist, Poet and Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Shrimati Maitreyi Devi wrote a novel titled ‘Eto Rokto Keno’ through which she was successful in communicating to the readers the misery and sufferings of the people of Bangladesh. She formed an organization comprising poets, writers, artists and intellectuals from Bangladesh. Her residence became a place of refugee for Bangladeshis. She and the late Begum Gauri Ayyub set up a center called ‘Khelaghar’ at the town of Badu near Kolkata, in which orphans of martyred Bangladeshis were accommodated and educated. For her great contribution, Shrimati Maitreyi Devi is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Dr Bidhu Bhushan Dutta Professor and Social Worker, India During the Liberation War, the young professor Bidhu Bhushan Dutta carried out relief work along with his students in the Dauki and Balat refugee camps in the bordering areas. He along with his team arranged for transfer and treatment of injured Freedom Fighters and the sick refugees to Nazarat Civil Hospital in Shillong. He and his team arranged for a photograph exhibition in the library auditorium of Shillong State Center titled ‘Bangladesh: Agony and Awakening’ in 1971. These photographs were printed in book form and 6,000 copies were sold. The money collected was utilized to buy food and medicine that was distributed among the refugees. For his great contribution, Dr Bidhu Bhushan Dutta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shaheed Lance Naik Albert Ekka Param Vir Chakra 14 Guard Regiment, Indian Army, India As a soldier of 14 Guard Regiment of the Indian Army, Lance Naik Albert Ekka embraced martyrdom after destroying the enemy bunkers in the battle for Gangasagar. For his valiant role and immeasurable contribution to the Liberation War, Shaheed Lance Naik Albert Ekka Param Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Santosh Kumar Ghosh Journalist, India

As the Co-Chairman of the ‘Bangladesh Assistance Committee’ and the Assistant Editor of ‘Anandabazar Patrika’, Shri Santosh Kumar Ghosh contributed greatly in creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. He extended help to the Bangladeshi writers and intellectuals by giving opportunity to write in the ‘Anandabazar Patrika’. For his remarkable contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Santosh Kumar Ghosh is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Phulrenu Guha Educationist and Social Worker, India

Politician and social worker Dr Phulrenu Guha extended her support to the cause of independence of Bangladesh. She visited the refugee camps in Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and submitted a report to the Indian Prime Minister. She organized military and vocational trainings to the women refugees of Bangladesh in ‘Karma Kuthi’ located in Dhakuria forest. For her remarkable support and contribution, Dr Phulrenu Guha is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Bhupesh Gupta Former Member of Rajya Sabha, India During the Liberation War, Shri Bhupesh Gupta was an important leader of the Communist Party of India. He contributed in multiple ways towards mobilizing public opinion amongst the people and the Government of India for Bangladesh. For his remarkable support and contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Bhupesh Gupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Gobinda Halder Lyricist, India During the Liberation War, Shri Gobinda Halder composed a number of timeless songs. These songs aired from the ‘Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendra’, were perpetual source of inspiration and courage to the Freedom Fighters and the freedom-craving people of Bangladesh. His notable songs include ‘Ekti Phulke Bachabo Bole, ‘Purbo Digante Shurjo Uthecche’, ‘Ek Sagar Rokter Binimoye’ etc. In recognition of his remarkable contribution, Shri Gobinda Halder is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shrimati Kalpana Datta Joshi Social Worker, India Shrimati Kalpana Datta Joshi, the valiant revolutionary of the Chittagong revolution, played an active part in promoting a spirit of solidarity in favour of the Liberation War. Her comrades of the youth revolution of British colonial period also organized themselves in support of the Liberation War. For her remarkable contribution, Shrimati Kalpana Datta Joshi is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Maulana Abdul Latif Social Worker, India Janab Maulana Abdul Latif was a respectable religious person from Kailashahar. During the Liberation War, he provided food and medical treatment to the refugees in the camps close to the border. Throughout the nine months, he continued to give such help and support to the refugees. He stood by the distressed people under extreme duress. For his kind behaviour and tireless work, he was widely respected by the refugees. For his great contribution, Janab Maulana Abdul Latif is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Gouri Prassanna Majumdar Lyricist, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Gouri Prassanna Majumdar composed lyrics in favour of Bangladesh, including the song “Shono Ekti Mujiborer Thekey Lokkho Mujiborer Konthoshwarer Dhwani” which crossed the barriers of time and still remains popular. He also provided support to the cultural activists from Bangladesh. For his great contribution in the Liberation War, Shri Gouri Prassanna Majumdar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Dilip Mukharji Politician and Professor, India During the Liberation War, Shri Dilip Mukharji carried out various activities in support of the refugees in Bangladesh-West Bengal border areas. He also helped the Prime Minister of Mujibnagar Government Janab Tajuddin Ahmed in various ways. He contributed significantly towards the cause of Liberation War. For his great contribution, Shri Dilip Mukharji is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Santosh Mukherjee Former Government Official and Social Worker, Tripura, India During the Liberation War, Shri Santosh Mukherjee was a volunteer in receiving the refugees from the border areas and escorting them to the camps. He was involved in collecting relief materials from the Government and the general public and distributed them in the refugee camps in Agartala area. He also provided shelter to the refugees in his own house. In October 1971, when Pakistan Army started shelling Mukti Bahini and refugee camps, they probably suspected his house to be a hide-out for the Mukti Bahini. Intense mortar fire was brought on his house and he was martyred. For his great contribution, Shri Santosh Mukherjee is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Brigadier (Retd) Kailash Prasad Pande Maha Vir Chakra Indian Army, India

During the Liberation War, Brigadier Kailash Prasad Pande was commanding the 61 Brigade of the Indian Army. Even after being wounded, he continued to lead his troops and won the crucial battle of Dholoi. After defeating Pakistan Army in Comilla and Daudkandi areas, he captured the Comilla Cantonment. He was awarded Maha Vir Chakra for his gallant actions. For the ferocity and speed, his Brigade was called as ‘Phantom Force’. For his courage and leadership, Brigadier (Retd) Kailash Prasad Pande Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Babu Jagjivan Ram Former Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, India

During the Liberation War, Babu Jagjivan Ram was India’s Minister of Defence. He consolidated and coordinated the war strategy with great efforts by providing training, arms and supplies to the Bangladeshi Freedom Fighters. He was instrumental in the creation of the ‘Joint Command of Bangladesh and Indian Forces for the final assault which led to victory. For his remarkable support and contribution in the Liberation War, Babu Jagjivan Ram is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Chandra Rajeshwar Rao Former General Secretary, Communist Party of India, India As the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India, Shri Chandra Rajeshwar Rao stood beside the people of Bangladesh during the Liberation War. In the Communist Party Congress held in Soviet Union, he strongly advocated for support to the Liberation War. He played an active role in obtaining support of the socialist countries in favour of Bangladesh. Shri Nihar Ranjan Ray Professor and Historian, India

The renowned historian, Rabindra scholar and national professor Shri Nihar Ranjan Ray carried out various activities in support of the Liberation War. He spoke about the Bangladesh crisis in different seminars in West Bengal and other parts of India. He collected signatures of intellectuals of West Bengal, demanding the release of Bangabandhu and asked the intellectual community worldwide to create pressure on the Pakistan Government to secure his release. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Nihar Ranjan Ray is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Father Marino Rigon Priest and Social Worker, Italy

During the Liberation War, Father Marino Rigon was the Priest of Baniachar Mission in Faridpur. He devoted himself to treating and nursing war victims. He set up a medical camp for providing treatment in the Mission. Not only did he treat the injured Freedom Fighters, but also gave them shelter, food and helped them by providing information. Many of the wounded Freedom Fighters went back to the battle front after having received treatment from his camp; Freedom Fighter Hemayet Uddin Bir Bikram is one of them. For his remarkable contribution in the Liberation War, Father Marino Rigon is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Captain Williamson A Sangma Former Chief Minister, Meghalaya, India During the Liberation War, a popular leader of Assam and Meghalaya, Captain Williamson A Sangma extended all assistance and cooperation to the Freedom Fighters and refugees in the bordering areas. He on behalf of the people of Meghalaya, repeatedly impressed upon the Indian Government to recognize Bangladesh. After the formation of the state of Meghalaya, he was appointed its first Chief Minister. In recognition of his remarkable contribution, Captain Williamson A Sangma is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Pranabesh Sen Cultural Activist, India

Shri Pranabesh Sen was the producer of the highly popular programme ‘Shangbad Parikrama’ of Akashbani Kolkata during the Liberation War. His reports on successes of Mukti Bahini kept alive the hope of millions of people both in besieged Bangladesh, as well as, in the refugee camps. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Pranabesh Sen is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Dr Triguna Sen Former Minister, India

During the Liberation War, Dr Triguna Sen played an important role in the Indian Lok Sabha, Diplomatic Missions, Indian and International Media in favour of Liberation War and against the genocide committed by Pakistan Army. He regularly visited refugee camps and supervised relief works. He came to Bangladesh in 1972 on invitation from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. For his remarkable contribution, Dr Triguna Sen is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Amiya Tarafdar Photographer, India During the Liberation War, Shri Amiya Tarafdar took rare photographs of the misery and destitution of the refugees in the refugee camps and the barbaric activities of Pakistan Army. A large number of his photographs were printed in the international press which attracted the attention of the world community. These photographs helped in obtaining international support for Bangladesh. He also captured photographs of some extraordinary moments on Bangabandhu’s return from Pakistan. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Amiya Tarafdar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Sir Senarat Gunewardene Former Minister, Ambassador and Human Rights Activist, Sri Lanka

During the Liberation War, Sir Senarat Gunewardene was the Chairman of “Ceylon-Bangladesh Solidarity Committee’. This organization consisted of political parties, trade unions and religious groups who worked for creating world opinion in support of Bangladesh. On 17 August 1971, the committee submitted a letter to the Pakistan Government protesting the trial of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. William A S Ouderland Bir Protik Associate of Mukti Bahini from Australia

During the Liberation War, William A S Ouderland was the General Manager of Bata Shoe Company in Tongi, Dhaka. He secretly dispatched pictures on genocide to the western countries. Ignoring the risk on his life, he also used to supply important information on the activities of Pakistan Army to the Freedom Fighters for their operations. For his great contribution in the Liberation War, William A S Ouderland Bir Protik is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

During the Liberation War, Shri Ramen Mitra provided shelter to the left political leaders of Bangladesh in his own residence. Shri Habul Banerjee Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Habul Banerjee allowed his 40 acres Lychee garden in Shonamura for establishment of the first field hospital for the Freedom Fighters. Freedom Fighters received medical treatment at this hospital. He regularly supplied food and medicine to the wounded Freedom Fighters in the hospital. Ms Margaret Rose Mawlong Former Government Official, India Ms Margaret Rose Mawlong was Shillong’s Magistrate during the Liberation War. She was responsible for supervision of relief work and providing assistance to women and children in the refugee camps. For the long nine months, she was away from home and worked relentlessly in the border areas. For her dedication to work, she was known as the ‘Lady with the Lamp’ in the area. For her great contribution towards the Liberation War, Ms Margaret Rose Mawlong is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Jishnu Dey Professor, India During the Liberation War, Shri Jishnu Dey was a professor in Calcutta. He, along with his wife, went to the border areas and worked as volunteers to help the refugees. They were active members of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity and few other associations. In addition, they acted as war correspondents and reported to the Indian media on the war situation. For his remarkable support and contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Jishnu Dey is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Jagdish C Sharma Sena Medal Former Army Officer and Ambassador, India During the Liberation War, Shri Jagdish C Sharma Sena Medal provided training to the soldiers of 1 Mujib Battery Artillery of the Mukti Bahini and played an important role in preparing them for military operations. He actively took part in the battles of Kasba, Bhairab, Akhaura and Brahmanbaria and was awarded Sena Medal for his gallant actions. Three of his brothers also fought in the Liberation War as members of the Mitra Bahini and two of them received gallantry awards. Later, he joined the Indian Foreign Service and became Ambassador and Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs. In recognition of his remarkable contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Jagdish C Sharma Sena Medal is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Prithwindra Mukherjee Researcher, Educationalist and Journalist, France The grandson of the revolutionary Bagha Jatin and living in France, Dr Prithwindra Mukherjee contributed remarkably in creating public opinion in favour of the Liberation War among the French writers, artists and intellectuals. He organized programmes for recitation of poems on Bangladesh with participation of French actors and actresses. On request of the Indian Ambassador in Paris, Shri Dwarkanath Chatterjee, Dr Prithwindra apprised the French elite and media of the Bangladesh situation. For his outstanding support and contribution towards the Liberation War, Dr Prithwindra Mukherjee is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Major General (Retd.) Gandharv Nagra Former Army Officer, India During the Liberation War, Major General Gandharv Nagra took over the Command of 101 Communication Zone on 5 December after General Gurbaksh Singh Gill was wounded. He advanced and liberated Kamalpur, Bakshiganj, Jamalpur and Tangail with 95 Brigade group and members of the Mukti Bahini from Sector 11. He reached near Mirpur Bridge in the evening of 15 December, 1971. On 16 December at 11:00 am, he sent a letter to Lt. General A A K Niazi asking him to surrender. Accompanied by a small number of soldiers, he entered the Command Post of General Niazi and convinced him to surrender. In recognition of his war tactics and bravery, Major General (Retd.) Gandharv Nagra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shrimati Mira Dey Professor, India

During the Liberation War, Professor Mira Dey and her husband Professor Jishnu Dey were active members of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity and other organizations formed to assist the refugees in the border areas. They also collected information on the war situation and worked as war correspondents. Besides, she helped the intellectuals, poets and writers from Bangladesh in various ways. Shrimati Mira Dey also served as a volunteer nurse in the field hospitals and medical camps set up for the treatment of Freedom Fighters and refugees. For her remarkable contribution towards the Liberation War, Shrimati Mira Dey is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Satyendranath Bose Padma Vibhushan Professor and Scientist, India

During the Liberation War, professor and famous scientist Shri Satyendranath Bose Padma Vibhushan was the first to donate a large amount of money to Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. In August 1971, he wrote an article in the “Jugantor’ newspaper on the Bangladesh situation. He, along with other intellectuals of West Bengal, signed a statement for unconditional release of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This helped create public opinion in favour of the Liberation War. For his remarkable contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Satyendranath Bose Padma Vibhushan is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Arjun Narasingha KC Politician, Nepal During the Liberation War, Shri Arjun Narasingha K C worked on behalf of the Government of Nepal to provide all out support to the Bangladesh Government. He created public support in Nepal in favour of Bangladesh in its just struggle. For his remarkable support and contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Arjun Narasingha K C is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Stephen Alan Marglin Professor, USA

During the Liberation War, Professor Stephen Alan Marglin of Harvard University published an article titled ‘Hope for Bangladesh’ together with his colleagues Prof. Edward S Mason and Robert Dorfmann. In this article, it was opined that the atrocities in Bangladesh must be stopped and the birth of Bangladesh was a reality. This article sensitized the whole world. He promoted the cause of Bangladesh in Washington DC. He, along with Prof. Papanek, published another report, which helped to enhance global awareness in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Stephen Alan Marglin is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Harinarayan Chakravarti Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Harinarayan Chakravarti allowed 665 acres of land in his Kallyanpur tea garden for the use of refugees and the Freedom Fighters. In this tea garden, 1,100 Freedom Fighters received training from Colonel Dhar of the Indian Army. He extended full cooperation at all times to politicians, Freedom Fighters and government officials from Bangladesh. Janab Abdus Salam Bar-at-Law Lawyer and Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Janab Abdus Salam Bar-at-Law allowed his house in Calcutta for accommodation of Bangladeshi leaders. He took funds from their family Waqf property and distributed those among the refugees. He worked with political leaders for creating awareness in favour of the Bangladesh Liberation War. Shri Prabodh Chandra Former Minister and Author, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Prabodh Chandra devoted himself to assisting the refugees in the camps and mobilizing support among the Indian people and Government in favour of Bangladesh. His book tilled ‘Blood Bath in Bangladesh’, written in 1971, is one of the valuable sources of information on the genocide committed by the Pakistan Army and the miseries of Bangladesh’s people. Janab Syed Asif Shahkar Judge and Poet, Sweden The Swedish Judge Janab Syed Asif Shahkar was the Joint Secretary of Punjab Students Union in Pakistan. In order to mobilize public opinion against genocide, he distributed leaflets and organized demonstrations. He also composed poems in support of the suffering humanity. He was arrested, tortured and given long-term jail sentence. The Pakistan Government branded him as a traitor. Later he migrated to Sweden. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Janab Syed Asif Shahkar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Ajit Kumar Das Journalist and Social Worker, India During the Liberation War, Shri Ajit Kumar Das was the correspondent of UPI in Calcutta. He devoted himself to collection of information on the Liberation War and arranged to release those in the media. He assisted the political leaders of Bangladesh and provided them with necessary support so that their statements and appeals reached the people. He also played a key role in organizing meetings, processions and press conferences in favour of Bangladesh. Gobind Ballabh Pant Hospital Agartala, Tripura, India

During the Liberation War, the 300 bed Gobind Ballabh Pant Hospital of Agartala provided medical treatment to the wounded Freedom Fighters, Indian soldiers and refugees. With the influx of a large number of patients, it was expanded to a 1,000 bed hospital by installing tents. Doctors, nurses and other staff members of the hospital provided round-the-clock treatment to the patients. Acting President of Bangladesh, Syed Nazrul Islam, Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed, and the US Senator Edward Moore Kennedy appreciated the services of the hospital in treating the suffering humanity tirelessly. For its great contribution towards the Liberation War, the Gobind Ballabh Pant Hospital of Tripura is awarded Friends of’ Liberation War Honour.

Shaheed Sepoy Ansuya Prasad Maha Vir Chakra 10 Mahar Regiment, Indian Army During the Liberation War, Sepoy Ansuya Prasad as a soldier of 10 Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army charged through enemy defences. He embraced martyrdom while destroying the enemy trenches and bunkers in the battle of Shamshernagar Airport in Sylhet. His gallant action contributed to the victory. For his bravery, Indian Government awarded him Maha Vir Chakra. In recognition of his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Shaheed Sepoy Ansuya Prasad Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Through his articles in the ‘Time’ published on 19 April, 1971 titled ‘The Battle of Kushtia’ and on 3 May titled ‘Dacca: The City of Dead’, he informed the world community of the war situation and the genocide being committed. The cover story of the ‘Time’ dated 25 October, 1971 was on Bangladesh and its main feature was Dan Coggin’s ‘East Pakistan: Even the Skies Weep’, which sensitized the whole world. He also interviewed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his return from Pakistan. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Dan Coggin is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Sukharanjan Dasgupta Journalist, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Sukharanjan Dasgupta was the chief correspondent of the ‘Anandabazar’. From 7 March 1971 until the end of Liberation War, he published many articles in favour of Bangladesh. He attended the oath taking ceremony of the Bangladesh Government in Mujibnagar. He regularly published the news on the battle fronts of Bogra, Kushtia, Khulna and Dinajpur. He provided all out cooperation to Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Shri Sukharanjan Dasgupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Abu Barkat Ataur Ghani Khan Choudhury Former Minister and Politician, India

During the Liberation War, a popular political leader, Janab Abu Barkat Ataur Ghani Khan Choudhury provided all out assistance and cooperation to the refugees from Bangladesh. He, along with his family members and political associates, arranged funds from their own resources and from the Government for distribution among the refugees. He also took initiatives for treatment of the refugees. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Janab Abu Barkat Ataur Ghani Khan Choudhury is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

The revered leader of the Indian people and the esteemed President of the Republic of India, His Excellency Shri Pranab Mukherjee Padma Vibhushan made outstanding contributions to the Liberation War of Bangladesh. From the beginning of the War, Shri Pranab Mukherjee took a firm stand by undertaking various measures at national and international levels in support of the Liberation War of Bangladesh and her struggling people.

Shri Pranab Mukherjee spoke in favour of recognition of Bangladesh in Rajya Sabha in a discussion in June 1971 and in a ‘calling attention’ in July 1971. In September 1971, as desired by the Prime Minister Shrimati Indira Gandhi, an ardent well-wisher of Bangladesh, Shri Pranab Mukherjee mobilized public opinion in favour of the Liberation War in the outside world as a delegate of India to the 59th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Paris. As a special envoy of Shrimati Gandhi, he visited the United Kingdom and Germany and held discussions with the leaders of those countries on providing support to the cause of Bangladesh.

As a trusted colleague of Shrimati Indira Gandhi, Shri Pranab Mukherjee held regular consultations with the Bangladesh leaders during the Liberation War and offered valuable suggestions on various important issues. A person infused with compassion and humanism, and having profound knowledge and farsightedness, Shri Pranab Mukherjee used to provide timely and prudent advice to the Indian Government on Bangladesh’s independence. During that period, he put strong arguments in the news media in support of the liberation of Bangladesh.

Born in 1935 in Birbhum of West Bengal, and endowed with a highly colourful political career holding various positions including those of Minister for Finance, External Affairs, Defence and Commerce of the Indian Government, Leader of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has been a true friend of Bangladesh and an outstanding catalyst in strengthening relations between Bangladesh and India.

The multifaceted contribution of Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the President of the Republic of India, in the Liberation War of Bangladesh was immense. People of all strata in Bangladesh always recall his great contributions with profound indebtedness.

As a mark of deep respect and gratitude of the Government and the people of Bangladesh, Shri Pranab Mukherjee Padma Vibhushan is being awarded in Dhaka today, 20 Falgun 1419 BS / 4 March 2013 AD, with the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour.

Dr Fidel Castro Ruz Former President, Cuba

Dr Fidel Castro Ruz, the great leader of Cuba, stood beside Bangladesh as a devoted friend during the Liberation War. He and the people of Cuba expressed their support in favour of Bangladesh. Cuban newspapers highlighted updates on the Liberation War with due importance. As an eminent leader of the Non-Aligned Movement, Castro took a firm position in favour of Bangladesh. He had a very warm and cordial relationship with Bangabandhu. For his great contribution in the Liberation War, Dr Fidel Castro Ruz is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour.

Lord Harold Wilson Former Prime Minister, UK

During the Liberation War, Lord Harold Wilson was the Leader of the Opposition in the British Parliament. He raised the demand for suspending any assistance to Pakistan and for the release of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from Pakistan jail. On 9 June 1971, a debate was held in the House of Commons based on the demand raised by Lord Harold Wilson. In recognition of his great contribution in the Liberation War, Lord Harold Wilson is awarded Bangladesh Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Begum Naseem Akhter Politician, Pakistan

Begum Naseem Akhter was a central leader of National Awami Party (NAP). She witnessed the genocide committed in Dhaka by Pakistan Army’s Operation Searchlight on 25 March 1971. On hearing the description of the genocide from her, poet Ahmad Salim composed a poem for which he was imprisoned. By the end of March 1971, she was arrested along with her political associates for holding a rally in Mall Road of Lahore in protest of the genocide that started in Bangladesh. During the nine months of the Liberation War, she and her family members were branded as traitors and subjected to humiliation. On 16 December 1971, she visited the Bangladeshi students in Lahore jail, and celebrated Bangladesh’s victory by distributing sweets and chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans. In recognition of the courageous and significant stand she took for the cause of Bangladesh despite being in Pakistan, Begum Naseem Akhter is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharyya Former Police Officer and Trainer of Mukti Bahini, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharyya was a senior police officer of 5 Assam Armed Police Training Center at Kahilipara. He was entrusted with the training of Mukti Bahini guerillas and commanders. He performed the task with utmost sincerity. Later, he was the security in charge and administrator of refugee camps at Halflong with two lacs refugees where he accomplished his task with efficiency. For his great contribution, Shri Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharyya is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Mrinmoy Bhattacharyya Professor, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Mrinmoy Bhattacharyya was the Secretary General of West Bengal College and University Teachers Association. This organization arranged many meetings for creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. With the help of this organization which was run by Shri Mrinmoy Bhattacharyya intellectuals from Bangladesh visited many places of India and held discussions to justify their struggle for independence. For his great contribution, Shri Mrinmoy Bhattacharyya is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr. Rupendra Chandra Bhowmik Physician and Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, sports organizer and physician of Agartala, Dr. Rupendra Chandra Bhowmik and his associates provided the sick and wounded refugees with first aid and carried them to the hospitals. They helped the patients by arranging blood donation programmes. They also collected life saving medicine for the hospitals. For his great contribution, Dr. Rupendra Chandra Bhowmik is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Amiya K. Chaudhuri Professor, India

During the Liberation War, Dr Amiya K. Chaudhuri was an active member of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. He used to help the Bangladeshi intellectuals by collecting funds for them through cultural programmes which he arranged along with other members of the organization. He attended many seminars all over India to raise public awareness in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Dr Amiya K. Chaudhuri is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Dhiraj Choudhury Artist, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Dhiraj Choudhury created many paintings highlighting the Bangladesh Liberation War. An exhibition of these paintings was held at Kunika Art Centre in Delhi on 28 August 1971. The undaunted spirit of Bangladesh’s struggle, and the tyranny, persecution and anguish suffered by the people of Bangladesh were vividly reflected in his paintings. Prime Minister Shrimati Indira Gandhi appreciated his effort. The agony in canvas created by Shri Dhiraj Choudhury helped in raising public awareness in favour of Bangladesh in the world arena. The sale proceeds of the exhibition were donated to the Bangladesh fund. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Dhiraj Choudhury is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Himangshu Mohan Choudhury Padmashree Former Government Official and Writer, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Himangshu Mohan Choudhury Padmashree was the SDO of the bordering Shonamura sub-division of Tripura. He had set up 16 large refugee camps. When the Pakistan Army started shelling on Shonamura town, he faced the situation with bravery and was able to bring normalcy. He extended maximum cooperation to the Freedom Fighters. For his efforts in maintaining law and order and relentless hard work in helping the refugees, on 26 January 1972, he was awarded Padmashree by the Indian Government. For his great contribution, Shri Himangshu Mohan Choudhury Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Rakhal Chandra Roy Choudhury Social Worker, Teacher and Writer, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Rakhal Chandra Roy Choudhury regularly donated relief in the refugee camps. He also collected information on their miseries and published them in newspapers. He organized meetings in favour of Bangladesh regularly. He published a novel named ‘Moron Shagore Jibon Shurjo’ which was widely circulated and appreciated by the readers. For his great contribution, Shri Rakhal Chandra Roy Choudhury is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

General Shankar Roychowdhury PVSM, ADC Former Chief of Army Staff and Politician, India During the Liberation War, as Brigade Major of Charlie Sector of Indian Army, General (then Major) Shankar Roychowdhury provided training and operational support to the Freedom Fighters of sectors 8 and 9. He devotedly provided highest cooperation to the Freedom Fighters during the nine months of Liberation War. For his great contribution, General Shankar Roychowdhury PVSM, ADC is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Sandip Das Social Worker, India During the Liberation War, Shri Sandip Das was an active member of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. He devoted himself to the service of the suffering people taking shelter in refugee camps. In addition, he took part in various programmes of the Samity. For his great contribution, Shri Sandip Das is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Mihir Deb Professor and Writer, India During the Liberation War, Shri Mihir Deb collected information from Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and the refugees, sent them to the newspapers, and wrote features on them. He relayed the programmes of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra by using his high frequency radio and microphones. He along with his students provided food and medicine to the sick and the wounded in Bisramganj Muktijoddha Hospital and refugee camps. At that time, he wrote a book of poems titled ‘Bangladesh, Shadesh O Ami’ and these poems were serially published in various newspapers. For his great contribution, Shri Mihir Deb is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Jagdish Chandra Dey Painter, India During the Liberation War, Shri Jagdish Chandra Dey created paintings reflecting the genocide, torture by Pakistan Army and also the gallant action of Freedom Fighters. By holding exhibitions, public support for Liberation War was created. The sale proceedings collected by selling the paintings were donated to the refugee camps. For his great contribution, Shri Jagdish Chandra Dey is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri P. C. Sorcar, Junior Magician, India During the Liberation War, famous magician Shri P. C. Sorcar, Junior performed magic at various places in India for collecting funds which he handed over to Prime Minister Shrimati Indira Gandhi and requested her to spend the money for the wellbeing of the oppressed of Bangladesh. During the nine months, his house was always open for the people of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Shri P. C. Sorcar, Junior is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Munshi Mohammad Fazle Kader Former Employee at Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, India Janab Munshi Mohammad Fazle Kader, an Indian national, was an employee at the then Pakistan Deputy High Commission in Kolkata. When preparations were underway to raise the flag of Bangladesh in the Deputy High Commission, Fazle Kader devoted himself to the service of Bangladesh. He provided the highest cooperation and extended all out support to Deputy High Commissioner Janab Hossain Ali and Press Secretary Janab Maksud Ali. He worked sincerely in preparation of documents, distribution of letters and leaflets and participating in meetings and processions. Although his salary was not paid regularly, Fazle Kader aligned himself with Bangladeshis and worked relentlessly for them. Such a loyal and selfless service provided by an Indian national was critically important for Liberation War. For his great contribution, Janab Munshi Mohammad Fazle Kader is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Narayan Khadka Politician, Nepal During the Liberation War, Dr Narayan Khadka, a Member of Constitution Drafting Committee and Leader of Nepali Congress participated and delivered speeches in various gatherings and public meetings in favour of Bangladesh. He played a key role in creating public opinion for the cause of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Dr Narayan Khadka is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Dhrubajyoti Lahiry Professor, India During the Liberation War, Dr Dhrubajyoti Lahiry was an executive member of West Bengal College and University Teachers Association and an active member of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. He provided all out cooperation to the refugees from Bangladesh. He also worked for creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh by holding meetings and seminars. For his great contribution, Dr Dhrubajyoti Lahiry is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Dil Bahadur Lama Former Police Officer and Trainer of Mukti Bahini, Nepal

During the Liberation War, Shri Dil Bahadur Lama being a trained police officer, on the instruction of his Government came to the bordering areas of Dinajpur and provided weapons and tactics training to Freedom Fighters. Due to his effort, the Freedom Fighters in the area became proficient on weapon handling and achieved success in the operations. For his great contribution, the former Inspector General of Police of Nepal Shri Dil Bahadur Lama is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Ram Saran Mahat Former Minister and Congress Leader, Nepal During the Liberation War, Dr Ram Saran Mahat actively participated in public meetings and delivered speeches in favour of Bangladesh. He played a key role in creating public opinion for the cause of Bangladesh, which helped the Bangladesh Liberation War. For his great contribution, Dr Ram Saran Mahat is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Zafar Malik Lawyer, Pakistan During the Liberation War, Advocate Zafar Malik was engaged as a defence counsel for those who were apprehended on charge of attempting to mobilize actions for stopping atrocities perpetrated in Bangladesh by Pakistani Military Junta. Along with 43 other intellectuals and political leaders, he signed a statement demanding release of Bangabandhu and termination of military offensive launched in Bangladesh. He played a key role in convincing progressive intellectuals to sign this statement. Continuing his campaign for Bangabandhu’s release he formed a supportive group to press forward his demand. In consequence, he was subjected to humiliation and harassment. In recognition of his contribution made to mobilize public opinion in support of Bangladesh, Janab Zafar Malik is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shrimati Utpala Misra Human Rights Activist, India

During the Liberation War, Shrimati Utpala Misra played an important role in creating opinion for the cause of Bangladesh. She collected funds through public meetings which she donated to the refugee camps. Visiting refugee camps, she provided services to the sick and the wounded. Her house was used as a shelter for the Freedom Fighters. For her great contribution, Shrimati Utpala Misra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Tomio Mizokami Professor and Social Worker, Japan During the Liberation War, Professor Tomio Mizokami – a youngman at that time – was an active member of Bangladesh Solidarity Front in Japan. His contributions made regularly to newspapers highlighting the atrocities of the Pakistan Army helped create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. He also took part actively in raising funds for the Bangladeshi refugees. For his great contribution, Tomio Mizokami is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Heiji Nakamura Professor and Social Worker, Japan

During the Liberation War, Heiji Nakamura was an active member of Bangladesh Solidarity Front in Japan. He helped raise public awareness in support of Bangladesh by writing to newspapers about the brutal offensives launched by Pakistan Army. He also played a pioneering role in raising funds for the refugees of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Heiji Nakamura is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr David Nalin Archeologist, USA During the Liberation War, an archeologist of Harvard University, Dr David Nalin, along with Anna Braun Taylor, staged hunger strike in favour of Bangladesh for creating world opinion in May 1971. He was engaged in directing the activities of Bangladesh Information Center. For his great contribution, Dr David Nalin is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Mohanlal Saha Social Worker, Businessman and Writer, India During the Liberation War, Shri Mohanlal Saha was an active member of the Citizen’s Committee set up by the Governor of Tripura, Shri A L Dias. As the General Secretary of Tripura Trade Association, he was involved in collecting fund for purchase of food and medicine for the refugees. He also arranged to collect fund from Ramkrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangha and wealthy citizens and sent them to refugee camps. For his great contribution, Shri Mohanlal Saha is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Jyoti Prasad Saikia Journalist, Writer and Former Government Official, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Jyoti Prasad Saikia as the staff correspondent of the Times of India, provided regular reports on sufferings caused on the people of Bangladesh by the Pakistan Army and the success of Freedom Fighters. As a prolific writer and dramatist, he wrote a play titled “Titasher Osru’, which was aired from Assam Radio and Akashbani. This became a popular progamme. Other than providing news, he used to assist foreign journalists by providing them with information on Liberation War. For his great contribution, Shri Jyoti Prasad Saikia is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Chandra Sekhar Samal Padmashree Former Chief Secretary of West Bengal, India During the Liberation War, Shri Chandra Sekhar Samal Padmashree was the SDO and later ADM of Islampur under West Dinajpur. At the beginning of Liberation War at his own initiative, he arranged for accommodation and food for the refugees. When the number of refugees swelled upto 6.5 lacs, he had set up 8 large camps. For his relentless hard work in helping the refugees, efficient supervision and devoted service, in January 1972, he was awarded Padmashree by the Indian Government. For his great contribution, Shri Chandra Sekhar Samal Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Priyadarsan Sensarma Professor, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Priyadarsan Sensarma was an active member of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. He spoke in many meetings and seminars, which helped create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Shri Priyadarsan Sensarma is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Petty Officer Chiman Singh Yadav Maha Vir Chakra Indian Navy During the Liberation War, Chiman Singh Yadav operated with the naval commando groups of the Mukti Bahini. He took part in destroying Pakistani vessels at Mongla and Khulna. On 11 December 1971, he sailed with the Mukti Bahini vessel Padma and took part in a crucial operation. When the vessel Padma reached near Khulna, it came under heavy fire and was hit. Swimming ashore, the wounded Chiman noticed that two other injured members of Mukti Bahini were about to sink. Without hesitation, Chiman swam back to the injured fighters and brought them ashore. In the meantime, Pakistani soldiers surrounded the scene and took him prisoner. On his release after the war, for his gallant action under trying conditions, Chiman Singh Yadav was decorated with Maha Vir Chakra by the Indian Government. For his great contribution, Petty Officer Chiman Singh Yadav Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr. Eqbal Ahmad Philosopher, Pakistan

During our Liberation War, Dr. Eqbal Ahmad, a left-leaning philosopher of Pakistan, was living in the USA where he undertook multifaceted steps to promote the cause of Bangladesh. His convincing speeches justifying the War of Liberation delivered at various universities in USA helped greatly in creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. Dr. Eqbal Ahmad’s strong initiatives played an important role in winning the support of US people towards our struggle for liberation. For his great contribution, Dr. Eqbal Ahmad is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Begum Tahira Mazhar Ali Human Rights Activist, Pakistan During the Liberation War, Begum Tahira Mazhar Ali was outspoken against the genocide and atrocities perpetrated on the people of Bangladesh. She was arrested along with her associates for staging the first demonstration held under her leadership at Mall Road of Lahore in protest of genocide in Bangladesh. In various forums, Tahira Ali raised the issues of genocide and torture that started in Bangladesh. Owing to her courageous steps, the Pakistani authorities intimidated her very often, but she remained steadfast with her mission. For upholding the cause of Bangladesh despite being in Pakistan, Begum Tahira Mazhar Ali is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora PVSM, Padma Bhushan Former GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, Indian Army

As the Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern theatre, Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora PVSM, Padma Bhushan played a significant role in organizing the Freedom Fighters, imparting training to them and commanding them in their final operations. He made an outstanding contribution to Bangladesh’s conclusive victory by signing, on behalf of the Joint Forces, the instrument of surrender of the Pakistan Army to the Joint Command at Ramna Race Course in Dhaka. In recognition of his able leadership shown in our Liberation War and invaluable contributions made for achieving final victory, Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora PVSM, Padma Bhushan is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Abu Sayid Ayub Writer and Philosopher, India

During the Liberation War, eminent writer and philosopher Janab Abu Sayid Ayub extended all kinds of support to the poets, writers and cultural activists from Bangladesh. He apprised the intellectual community in India of actual status of the War of Liberation and appealed to them to stand beside Bangladesh. In addition, he made relentless efforts to win the support of the Indian intellectuals for the cause of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Janab Abu Sayid Ayub is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Jyoti Basu Former Chief Minister, West Bengal, India

During the nine months of Liberation War, veteran politician Shri Jyoti Basu made all out efforts to provide food, shelter and medical facilities to millions of refugees fleeing Bangladesh. He played a strong role in strengthening political unity and forming public opinion in support of the War of Liberation. For his great contribution, Shri Jyoti Basu is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Purnendu Kumar Basu Professor, India

During the Liberation War, Pro-VC of Calcutta University Shri Purnendu Kumar Basu was the Executive Chairman of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. He provided leadership to the Samity and delivered lectures in various meetings and seminars which helped create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Shri Purnendu Kumar Basu is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Mir Ghaus Bakhsh Bizenjo Politician, Pakistan

Janab Mir Ghaus Bakhsh Bizenjo, the General Secretary of National Awami Party during the Liberation War, was a close associate of Bangabandhu. In March 1971, he visited Dhaka along with Janab Khan Abdul Wali Khan and tried to remove the impasse to handing over power to the elected representatives. Under his leadership, the National Awami Party continued to appraise the people of Pakistan of the genocide committed in Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Janab Mir Ghaus Bakhsh Bizenjo is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shrimati Kabita Bose Human Rights Activist, India During the Liberation War, Shrimati Kabita Bose organized public meetings for creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. She arranged for sending funds collected through these meetings to various refugee camps. She visited these camps where she took care of the ailing people. Shri Pershanath Chowdhury Journalist, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Pershanath Chowdhury was a journalist and proprietor of the English newspaper ‘Shillong Times’. At the beginning of the Liberation War, he helped set up a camp with 200 refugees in a primary school building near Dauki. He regularly published articles in his popular newspaper on genocide and sufferings of refugees, which appealed to the conscience of the people of Shillong and the foreigners living there. These information travelled to the outside world. For his great contribution, Shri Pershanath Chowdhury is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Hari Sadhan Dasgupta Film Producer, India

During the Liberation War, eminent film producer Shri Hari Sadhan Dasgupta organized the filmmakers, artists, technicians and other cultural activists from Bangladesh and presented cultural programmes to enhance public awareness in favour of Bangladesh and raise funds. The proceeds of the programmes were spent for the welfare of the refugees. For his great contribution, Shri Hari Sadhan Dasgupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi Politician and Minister, India

During the Liberation War, leader of the Youth Congress, Shri Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi extended support for mobilizing creating public opinion by arranging meetings and programmes regularly. He and his team members collected fund from the people and sent for the welfare of the refugees. For his great contribution, Shri Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Faiz Ahmed Faiz Poet and Journalist, Pakistan

During the Liberation War, Janab Faiz Ahmed Faiz wrote a number of poems on the genocide committed in Bangladesh and the anguishes, severity and sufferings faced by the oppressed people. Despite repeated warnings and regular intimidations of the Pakistani regime, he remained steadfast in upholding the just causes. For his great contribution, Janab Faiz Ahmed Faiz is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Herbert Feith Professor, Australia

During the Liberation War, Professor Herbert Feith was an active member of the committee to support Bangladesh, which was formed in Melbourne, Australia. In September 1971, he delivered a series of lectures on refugees and their humanitarian conditions at the Department of Asian Studies in Flinders University. His scholarly responses to the crisis were reflective of his support to the cause of suffering humanity. For his great contribution, Herbert Feith is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Kripesh Ranjan Ghosh Social Worker, India

From the beginning of the Liberation War, Shri Kripesh Ranjan Ghosh devoted himself to assist the refugees in the bordering town of Dauki. Two of his houses in Dauki were given for accommodating the refugees and Freedom Fighters. Using the trucks of his company, he used to carry food, medicine and clothings to the refugee camps. He had set up Mukti Shangram Shahayak Samity in Dauki and distributed leaflets, periodicals among Freedom Fighters, refugees and Indian citizens. For his great contribution, Shri Kripesh Ranjan Ghosh is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Allen Ginsberg Poet and Social Worker, USA After witnessing the tribulations and sufferings of the refugees in the camps, the American poet Allen Ginsberg wrote a unique poem titled ‘September on Jessore Road’. In his poem, Allen Ginsberg portrayed the grim picture of the inhuman conditions under which the refugees lived in the camps, the atrocities carried out by the barbaric Pakistan Army on the innocent Bangalees and about the sufferings of the refugees. This poem appealed to the conscience of the people all around the world. For his remarkable role in the Liberation War, Allen Ginsberg is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shrimati Ipsita Gupta Human Rights Activist, India During the Liberation War, Shrimati Ipsita Gupta organized public meetings for creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. Funds collected through these public meetings were donated to refugee camps. She visited these camps and provided services to the sick and the wounded. For her great contribution, Shrimati Ipsita Gupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shaheed Rifleman Pati Ram Gurung Maha Vir Chakra 5/1 Gorkha Rifles, Indian Army During the Liberation War, the Nepali born Rifleman, Pati Ram Gurung, was a soldier of 5/1 Gorkha Rifles of Indian Army, attached to a medium machinegun detachment in the battle of Uthali in Chuadanga. On 30 November 1971, when enemy forces attacked his company, the young Gurung charged towards the enemy single-handed. Even after being mortally wounded, he continued the charge and silenced the enemy machinegun before he fell dead. The Indian Government posthumously honoured him with the Maha Vir Chakra for his sacrifice and supreme courage. For his great contribution, Shaheed Rifleman Pati Ram Gurung Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Habib Jalib Poet and Politician, Pakistan During the Liberation War, Janab Habib Jalib was a leader of National Awami Party of Pakistan. He delivered speeches against genocide in different forums and wrote poems on the atrocities committed in Bangladesh. He was imprisoned for expressing opinion against the Pakistani rulers but he remained steadfast in his conviction. For taking a firm stand towards the cause of Bangladesh despite living in Pakistan, Janab Habib Jalib is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Malik Ghulam Jilani Politician, Pakistan In 1971, Janab Malik Ghulam Jilani was a Vice Chairman of West Pakistan Awami League. After the arrest of Bangabandhu on 25 March 1971, he wrote an open letter to General Yahya Khan demanding Bangabandhu’s release. In consequence, he was imprisoned. For taking a strong position for the cause of Bangaldesh despite living in Pakistan, Janab Malik Ghulam Jilani is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Sven Lampell Social Worker, Sweden

During the Liberation War, the retired Swedish Air Force officer Sven Lampell was working as an officer of the Red Cross in Dhaka. He maintained communication with Freedom Fighters and expressed his empathy towards them in various ways. Later, as the Head of the Red Cross, he received the resignation of Dr. A. M. Malik, the Head of the puppet Government. As an expression of his solidarity with the cause of Bangladesh, he adopted a war child of 1971. For his strong support towards the Liberation War, Sven Lampell is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Shameem Asraf Malik Politician and Film-maker, Pakistan

During the Liberation War, Janab Shameem Asraf Malik drafted a statement protesting the arrest of Bangbandhu and demanding his release, which was signed by 44 intellectuals and political leaders of Pakistan. He and his wife NAP leader Begum Naseem Akhter, were subjected to humiliation for issuing statements in favour of Bangladesh. For bravely supporting the cause of Bangaldesh even while living in Pakistan, Janab Shameem Asraf Malik is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Major General Antony Harold Edward Michigan Maha Vir Chakra Officer, Indian Army

During the Liberation War, Major General Antony Harold Edward Michigan was commanding 41 Mountain Brigade of Indian Army. On 30 November 1971, during the attack on Uthali near Chuadanga, a strongly fortified defended position, his troops were facing enemy with automatic and tank fire from three sides. He led the troops from the front with courage disregarding his safety, which inspired them, and they captured the position after heavy fight. Next day he launched the attack on Darshana and by sheer offensive spirit gained a decisive victory. During these actions, Major General Michigan commanded his brigade with remarkable professional skill and displayed gallantry and exemplary leadership and was awarded Maha Vir Chakra by the Indian Government. For his great contribution, Major General Antony Harold Edward Michigan Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Waris Mir Professor and Journalist, Pakistan During the Liberation War, Janab Waris Mir came to Bangladesh along with a group of students. Being shocked to witness the incidents of massacre and genocide and hear about the atrocities committed here, he wrote a series of articles in the Daily Jung. In consequence, he was subjected to criticism and humiliation in Pakistan. For justly upholding the cause of Bangladesh despite being in Pakistan, Janab Waris Mir is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Janab Qazi Faiz Mohammad Politician, Pakistan During the Liberation War, Janab Qazi Faiz Mohammad was a Senior Vice-Chairman of All Pakistan Awami League and a trusted associate of Bangabandhu in the then West Pakistan. Staying underground in 1971, he tried his best to form public opinion for the release of Bangabandhu. When the war was over, he came to Dhaka without a passport to meet Bangabandhu and expressed his desire to settle in the independent Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Janab Qazi Faiz Mohammad is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Lady Ranu Mookerjee Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Lady Ranu Mookerjee was the President of Fine Arts Academy of Calcutta. She arranged regular cultural programmes in the auditorium of the Academy and sent the funds raised through these programmes for the welfare of the refugees. She also provided assistance and cooperation in many ways to the intellectuals and cultural activists coming from Bangladesh. For her great contribution, Lady Ranu Mookerjee is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Bijoy Singh Nahar Former Deputy Chief Minister, West Bengal, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Bijoy Singh Nahar was the Deputy Chief Minister of West Bengal. As a leader of Congress, he provided various support to Freedom Fighters and refugees. He was the Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Mukti Shangram Shahayak Samity through which he provided relief to the refugees in the West Bengal refugee camps and also supervised the distribution work. Shri Jitendra Chandra Pal Journalist, India

Shri Jitendra Chandra Pal, the founder editor of the first daily newspaper of Tripura named ‘Jagoron’, published regular news and articles in his newspaper reflecting the success of Freedom Fighters and atrocities of Pakistan Army during the Liberation War. He worked relentlessly for creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution, Shri Jitendra Chandra Pal is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Anwer Pirzado Poet, Journalist and Pilot, Pakistan

Janab Anwer Pirzado was a pilot of Pakistan Air Force and a poet of Sindhi language. After the election of 1970, he wrote a letter to one of his colleagues praising the leadership of Bangabandhu, which was intercepted by the Intelligence agency. His letter read, “Sheikh Mujib is the true leader of the Pakistanis. Power must be handed over to him peacefully as he has won the election; otherwise, the consequences may be grave.” As a result, he was tried for treason in a martial law court, dismissed from service and sentenced to imprisonment for seven years. Being aggrieved to learn about the genocide while in jail, he wrote a unique poem titled ’26 March 1971′. For his great contribution, Janab Anwer Pirzado is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Vice Admiral Swaraj Prakash Maha Vir Chakra Commander of Naval Ship, Indian Navy During the Liberation War, Vice Admiral Swaraj Prakash was in command of INS Vikrant, the hub of Indian naval operations in the Bay of Bengal. He conducted several air strikes from INS Vikrant on the Pakistan Army and Navy positions in the Chittagong area, causing casualties to them and devastating their morale. Owing to his effective plans, INS Vikrant dominated the high seas and blocked the supply route for Pakistan defence forces. In recognition of his strategic and bold leadership, Vice Admiral Swaraj Prakash was awarded Maha Vir Chakra by the Indian Government. For his great contribution, Vice Admiral Swaraj Prakash Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Raghu Rai Padmashree Photographer and Photojournalist, India During the Liberation War, Shri Raghu Rai Padmashree, as a photojournalist of the Daily Statesmen, captured and printed numerous pictures of the battle fronts and refugee camps. His photo exhibition held in 1971 reflected the miserable conditions in the refugee camps. He also took rare snapshots of the surrender ceremony of Pakistan Army in December 1971. In 1972, the Indian Government awarded him Padmashree in recognition of his contribution. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Raghu Rai Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Ahmad Salim Poet and Human Rights Activist, Pakistan

During the Liberation War, Janab Ahmad Salim was outspoken against the genocide, torture and persecution unleashed upon the people of Bangladesh. As he used to raise these issues in various forums, the Pakistani regime intimidated him very often; however, Ahmad Salim was upright in accomplishing his just duties. Being tried at a martial law court on charge of composing poems protesting genocide in Bangladesh, he suffered imprisonment, paid fines and withstood whipping. For his great contribution, Janab Ahmad Salim is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shaheed 2/Lt Shamsher Singh Samra Maha Vir Chakra 8 Guard Regiment, Indian Army During the Liberation War, 2/Lt Shamsher Singh Samra was a Platoon Commander of 8 Guard Regiment of Indian Army. On 3 December 1971, his regiment was conducting attack on well-defended Pakistani position in Hilli. Undaunted by the heavy enemy fire Shamsher charged towards a machinegun post and destroyed it by a grenade. His troops watched with silent admiration. While charging towards the next machinegun post, the young Shamsher was hit by a burst of bullets. The Indian Government posthumously honoured him with the Maha Vir Chakra for his sacrifice and supreme courage. For his great contribution, Shaheed 2/Lt Shamsher Singh Samra Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Anil Kumar Sarkar Professor, India During the Liberation War, Shri Anil Kumar Sarkar was an active member of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. He provided assistance to Freedom Fighters and refugees and shelter to the teachers from Bangladesh at his residence and in hostels. He also provided valuable cooperation to the intellectuals from Bangladesh in many ways. For his great contribution, Shri Anil Kumar Sarkar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Arjun Sengupta Professor, India During the Liberation War, Dr Arjun Sengupta closely advised and assisted Shri Durga Prasad Dhar, Chairman of Policy Planning Board of India and a key adviser to Shrimati Indira Gandhi on the Bangladesh situation. He played a significant role in mobilizing the academia, intelligentsia and the press to win their support towards the cause of Bangladesh. Lt. General Sagat Singh PVSM, Padma Bhushan Commander of IV Corps, Indian Army During the Liberation War, Lt. General Sagat Singh was the commander of IV Corps of Indian Army. His Corps rapidly defeated and captured Pakistani defences and made the famous advance to Dhaka crossing the Meghna River only in 13 days and created history. On 16 December 1971, he entered Dhaka and witnessed the signing of the surrender by Lt. General A A K Niazi. For his leadership quality, the Indian Government honoured him with the Padma Bhushan award. For his great contribution in the Liberation War, Lt. General Sagat Singh PVSM, Padma Bhushan is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

He was also successful in mobilizing support for Bangladesh among the Muslim communities in India. Later, he became the President of India. Shri Gulzarilal Nanda Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhusan Former Prime Minister of India

During the Liberation War, Shri Gulzarilal Nanda Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhusan was the Home Minister of India. He provided all out support and cooperation to Prime Minister Shrimati Indira Gandhi in her efforts to help the cause of Bangladesh. He arranged for adequate security and welfare measures in the refugee camps. He was a strong voice in the Parliament in supporting the Mukti Bahini and condemning the genocide committed by the Pakistan Army. He addressed various public meetings and seminars which helped create public opinion for supporting Bangladesh. Dr. Zainal Abedin Physician and Politician, India

During the Liberation War, the Health Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Zainal Abedin worked relentlessly for the welfare of refugees. He regularly visited the refugee camps and provided assistance to them. He was an organizer of Mukti Shangram Shahayak Samity and Chairman of the Relief Committee of Government of West Bengal and successfully tackled the outbreak of cholera and diarrhoea in the refugee camps. During the long nine months, he provided shelters to about 150 refugees and provided them with food in his two houses. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Dr. Zainal Abedin is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Ken Arimitsu Social Worker, Japan

During the Liberation War, Ken Arimitsu was a student leader of Waseda University of Japan and the Deputy Secretary General of Japan Solidarity Committee (Tokyo group) for Bangladesh. He tirelessly worked to create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh and organized a number of fund raising and awareness events. The members of their group supported the Bangalee staff members of the Pakistan Embassy and the Bangalee university students in Tokyo who denounced Pakistan nationality. He also set up another organization named ‘Lets act as brothers and sisters of the People of East Bengal’, through which he appealed to the student community of Japan to support the cause of Bangladesh. During the Liberation War, a popular actor of Bengali and Hindi films and a producer, Shri Biswajit R. Chatterjee played a leading role in creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh by organizing the film actors and artists. Filmmaker Shri Ritwik Ghatak made a documentary based on the Liberation War, titled ‘Durbar Goti Padma’, in English titled ‘There Flows Padma the Mother’ with the financial support from Shri Biswajit R. Chatterjee, in which the latter also played a role. He, along with his colleagues, arranged meetings and cultural programmes for collecting funds, which were sent for the welfare of the refugees. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Shri Biswajit R. Chatterjee is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

During the Liberation War, peasant leader and social worker Shri Shyamol Chowdhury organized the peasants and the youth of Udaipur of Tripura to provide assistance to the refugees as volunteers. By arranging public meetings, he helped create public opinion in favour of the Bangladesh Liberation War. He also organized the youth to raise funds for the welfare of the suffering refugees. He also provided assistance and shelter to the political leaders coming from Bangladesh. Ellen Connett Social Worker, UK

Ellen Connet worked for distribution of food and medicine through ‘Operation Omega’ and ‘Action Bangladesh’ to the suffering masses of Bangladesh. She was arrested while distributing relief materials inside Bangladesh and was imprisoned for two years. While in Jessore jail, she discovered that she was pregnant. She was released from imprisonment after the Liberation War and gave birth to her child in 1972. She named her child after the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as Peter William Mujib Connet. For her sincere love and support for the people of Bangladesh and remarkable contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Ellen Connet is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Paul Connett Professor and Social Worker, UK

Dr Paul Connet and his associates worked for two organizations called ‘Operation Omega’ and ‘Action Bangladesh’ during the Liberation War. Through these organizations, food and medicines were distributed among the suffering masses. He also assisted in organizing a huge rally at Trafalgar Square on 1 August 1971 and delivered a speech. This public meeting created sympathy and support for the cause of Bangladesh Liberation War. Wing Commander Swaroop Krishna Kaul Maha Vir Chakra, PVSM, ADC Commander of 37 Squadron, Indian Air Force During the Liberation War, Wing Commander Swaroop Krishna Kaul Maha Vir Chakra, PVSM, ADC was the Commander of 37 Squadron flying the Hawker Hunter aircraft. Since 3 December 1971, he carried out successful recce missions on Pakistan Army positions in Comilla, Sylhet, Syedpur and Dhaka areas, which were crucial for the Indian Army assault plans. He led his squadron in the attack of the Dacca airfield and the Governor House and also shot down two Pakistani F-86 Sabre jets. For exemplary leadership and courage, he was awarded Maha Vir Chakra by the Indian Government. Later, he was promoted to Air Chief Marshal and Chief of Air Staff and later Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee. Janab Muzammil Ali Laskar Lawyer and Social Worker, India During the Liberation War, Janab Muzammil Ali Laskar, a renowned lawyer of Silchar, Assam and 20 other lawyers formed a volunteer group which regularly visited different refugee and Freedom Fighters camps and distributed relief goods among refugees collected from Silchar area. In different public meetings and seminars, he appealed to the people especially the Muslim community, not to be misled by the Pakistani propaganda, and support the cause for Bangladesh Liberation. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Janab Muzammil Ali Laskar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Major General Lachhman Singh Lehl PVSM, Virchakra Commander 20 Mountain Division, Indian Army During the Liberation War, Major General Lachhman Singh Lehl PVSM, Virchakra was the Commander of 20 Mountain Division of Indian Army whose forces successfully advanced from north-west of Bangladesh. Within the shortest possible time, his forces captured Hilli, Phoolbari, Pirganj, Gobindganj, Gaibandha, Balurghat, Charkhai, Bhaduria, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra and surrounding areas by defeating the Pakistan Army. This paved the way for the ultimate defeat of Pakistan Army and their surrender. Research-oriented books written by him on the Liberation War earned appreciation from the students of history. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Major General Lachhman Singh Lehl PVSM, Virchakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mandal Padmashree Physician, India During the Liberation War, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mandal Padmashree was working in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. On receipt of information that few Bangalee employees in the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi were being brutally tortured by Pakistanis and were kept under confinement, with the assistance of some doctors. He managed to bring them for treatment to AIIMS after treatment, he secretly arranged for them to join the Liberation War. This incident was reported in the press and raised noise in the diplomatic circles. He also arranged for treatment of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani in AIIMS under his care. Moreover, many Bangladeshis were treated by him free of charge in New Delhi. He also visited the hospitals in West Bengal and provided medical treatment to the sick and wounded Freedom Fighters and refugees. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mandal Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Tariq Rahman Professor, Pakistan

During the Liberation War, Dr Tariq Rahman was a young officer of Pakistan Army, who being terribly disturbed by the atrocities committed by Pakistan Army, resigned from the Army. He raised voice against the genocide committed by Pakistan Army and earned the wreath of the Military Junta. He researched significantly on the Language Movement and the Bangladeshi culture. In his literary pursuit, he wrote about the atrocities committed by Pakistan Military Junta. He is a strong voice in favour of Pakistan’s apology to Bangladesh for the atrocities in 1971. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Dr Tariq Rahman is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

During the Liberation War, Shri Pranabranjan Ray was an active member of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity and Shilpi-shahityik-buddhijibi Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. He organized various programmes and exhibitions for raising funds for the Freedom Fighters and refugees. He participated in public meetings for raising public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. Waheeda Rehman Padma Bhushan, Padmashree Actor and Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Waheeda Rehman Padma Bhushan, Padmashree, as one of the prominent organizers of the Bangladesh Shahayak Samity of Maharashtra, participated in various programmes, which helped create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. She played an important role in organizing cultural programmes and also participated in those for collection of funds for the refugees. For her outstanding support and contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, eminent actor and social activist Waheeda Rehman Padma Bhushan, Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr Rifaat Mohamed El Said Professor and Politician, Egypt During the Liberation War, as an active member of Egypt Peace Council and Coordinating Secretary General of World Peace Council Dr Rifaat Mohamed El Said and their organizations supported the cause of Bangladesh. Amidst restrictions issued by the Egyptian Government, his organization issued statements, held seminars and conferences and collected thousands of signatures showing support to the suffering people of Bangladesh. He submitted the signature campaign report to the Human Rights Commission, which angered his Government, and he was arrested for his activities. As Coordinating Secretary General of World Peace Council, he visited a number of countries and raised public opinion in favour of the Bangladesh Liberation War and release of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from jail. During the Liberation War, a leftist politician and academic, E. A. Vidyasekera and some of his friends formed the Ceylon-Bangladesh Solidarity Committee. Many trade union leaders and teachers joined the organization. As the leader of the organization, he addressed public meetings and distributed leaflets which helped create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. His organization made a strong appeal to the Government not to allow use of the Colombo Airport for transportation of Pakistani Military to Bangladesh. They also arranged demonstrations against holding of Pakistani cultural programmes in Sri Lanka. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, E. A. Vidyasekera is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Shri Shukharanjan Sengupta Journalist, India

During the Liberation War, staff reporter of Jugantar’, Shri Shukharanjan Sengupta regularly published articles on the success of Freedom Fighters and atrocities committed by Pakistan Army. He was entrusted with conducting the prestigious national programme Spot Light’ of All India Radio in which he reflected the true picture of the genocide. As a war correspondent, he accompanied the Indian Army in their final offensive and provided information on the battle field successes, which raised the morale of Mukti Bahini and Mitra Bahini. Shri Binay Roy Photographer, India During the Liberation War, the reputed photographer Shri Binay Roy was the head of the camera unit of Indian Film Division which was engaged in preparing news reel and documentaries for creating awareness in India and abroad on the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was the first Indian photographer to enter Bangladesh after the 25th March genocide and the 26th March declaration of independence by Bangabandhu and collected photographs which were exhibited in the news relay in the cinema halls all over India. Later, in the films prepared on the Liberation War, his photographs were extremely used. Shri Sourindranath Bhattacharyya Professor, India During the Liberation War, Shri Sourindranath Bhattacharyya was a devoted Joint Secretary of Calcutta University Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. As a member of the Samity, he met Prime Minister Shrimati Indira Gandhi and appealed to her for recognizing Bangladesh. He took an active part in rehabilitating intellectuals from Bangladesh. Shri Shalil Ghosh Padmashree Cultural Activist and Social Worker, India During the Liberation War, Shri Shalil Ghosh Padmashree, as one of the prominent organizers of the Bangladesh Shahayak Samity of Maharashtra, participated in various programmes, which helped create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. He played an important role in organizing cultural programmes and also participated in them for collection of funds for the refugees. This organization bought a mobile field hospital with the fund that was collected and sent it to the refugee camps. Dr Aniruddha Ray Professor, India During the Liberation War, Dr Aniruddha Ray, along with his close associates, collected large quantities of medicine, food, clothing, etc. and personally distributed those in refugee camps of the bordering areas. He visited New Delhi, met high officials of Indian Government and submitted first-hand report on the plight of the refugees and appealed for help. He took a leading role in organizing Bangladesh Shahayak Samity and continued to help Bangladeshi intellectuals, teachers and refugees. He addressed public meetings which helped create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. Shri Shakti Chattapadhaya Poet, India

During the Liberation War, poet Shri Shakti Chattapadhaya took up a firm position in favour of the Liberation War. Apart from poems, he also published features and articles on the Liberation War in the daily newspaper Anandabazar’. He edited and published a number of books during the Liberation War. In May 1971, within a short period, he published a 250-page book titled ‘Shangbadiker Chokhe Bangladesher Muktijuddho’ which is considered to be the first book on the Liberation War. His publications helped create public awareness against the genocide in Bangladesh. Renowned lawyer Shri Rabindranath Chowdhury was an ardent supporter of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. During the War, he sent a 46-page report to the Prime Minister Shrimati Indira Gandhi containing information on the atrocities of Pakistan Army and appealed to her to take necessary action to stop the genocide. He also participated and delivered speeches in various public meetings and seminars to create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. Dr. Richard A. Cash Research Physician, USA

At the beginning of the Liberation War, Dr. Richard A. Cash was a research physician at the Cholera Research Laboratory in Dhaka. He witnessed the genocide conducted by the Pakistan Army. After reaching Washington DC, he helped to set up an organization called ‘Friends of Bangladesh’. This organization held demonstrations in various places of USA in favour of Bangladesh. He also organized seminars and educational programmes in favour of Bangladesh, which helped create public opinion. He also actively participated in fund raising for Bangladeshi refugees. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Dr. Richard A. Cash is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Dr. Nalinakkho Chowdhury Physician, India During the Liberation War, Dr. Nalinakkho Chowdhury was the Secretary of the Red Cross Society of Silchar, Assam. He regularly visited the refugee and Freedom Fighters camps in the border areas and provided treatment to the refugees and the wounded Freedom Fighters. He made donations himself and also collected funds from the affluent people and utilized them for providing the treatment. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Dr. Nalinakkho Chowdhury is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Pannalal Dasgupta Journalist and Social Worker, India During the Liberation War, a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, Shri Pannalal Dasgupta organized public meetings for creating opinion in favour of Bangladesh. As the editor of weekly magazine ‘Compass’, he used to publish articles, reports and features reflecting the genocide committed by Pakistan Army and the battle field successes of the Freedom Fighters. He used to work as a volunteer in the refugee camps. His house was turned into a refugee camp. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Shri Pannalal Dasgupta is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shaheed Captain Manmohan Sagar Duggal Officer, Indian Army During the Liberation War, when the Mukti Bahini artillery battery was being raised in Kukital of Assam, Captain Manmohan Sagar Duggal provided guidance in providing training, vehicles and equipments. He was untiring in his effort in assisting the Freedom Fighters. During the Battle of Shamshernagar on 30 September, he charged with the infantry battalion as forward observer and was martyred short of enemy bunkers. Captain Duggal and his two brothers fought as Mitra Bahini officers in the Bangladesh Liberation War. For his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty, the Indian Army cited his name in the ‘Mention of Dispatch’. Daniel C. Dunham City-planner and Architect, USA

A city-planner and architect, Daniel C. Dunham was working in the Faculty of Architecture of the Engineering University of Dhaka in the sixties. He developed a deep affection for the people and a keen interest in the culture of Bangladesh. During the Liberation War, as an active member of the Bangladesh Information Centre, he sent many memos and letters to US Senators and Congressmen expressing concern about the genocide being committed in Bangladesh. In September 1971, he visited a number of refugee camps in West Bengal, submitted a report to the US Government depicting their plight and sufferings and suggested remedial actions. In November, he delivered a speech at the International Study and Research Institute, New York on ‘Bengal: Background to the Indo-Pakistan Conflict’ in support of the Bangladesh Liberation War. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Daniel C. Dunham is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Mary Frances Dunham, during her long stay in Bangladesh in the sixties, had developed a deep affection for the people and a keen interest in the culture of Bangladesh. During the Liberation War, as an active member of the Bangladesh Information Centre, she submitted many memos and letters to the decision-makers in the USA and circulated an open letter to Mrs. Richard M. Nixon on May 24, 1971 on the genocide being committed in Bangladesh. Her passion, understanding and first-hand experience on Bangladesh added new dimensions to the efforts of the Bangladesh Information Centre. She wrote an informative book titled ‘Jari Gaan’ based on Bengali culture and art. During the Liberation War, Dr Asghar Ali Engineer was relentlessly putting efforts to convince the people of Maharashtra to support the cause of Bangladesh. He particularly addressed the Muslim community and informed them of the atrocities committed by Pakistan Army, which was against the teaching of Islam. He also organized fund raising programmes for the suffering refugees. Shri Snehangshu Kanta Acharyya Social Worker, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Snehangshu Kanta Acharyya arranged shelter for the political leaders of Bangladesh who had come to India. He took part in radio programmes which helped in creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. Shri Somnath Hore Artist, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Somnath Hore painted pictures which depicted atrocity, genocide and hunger. His paintings reflected the heinous crime committed by Pakistan Army. He arranged painting and sculpture exhibitions, which were attended by a large number of people. He made sculptures depicting the women victims of the war. Through his paintings and sculptures, he helped mobilize public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. Janab Master Khan Gul Politician, Pakistan

A trusted colleague of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Raman, Janab Master Khan Gul was the Vice Chairman of All Pakistan Awami League. He was the editor and publisher of ‘Bange Haram’, the party newspaper of Awami League. After the genocide started and Awami League was banned as a political party, he went underground and relentlessly tried to form public opinion against the genocide and the release of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from jail. He assisted many Bangalees who were interned in Pakistan to cross over to Afghanistan for their journey to Bangladesh. Janab Khan Abdul Wali Khan Politician, Pakistan

During the Liberation War, Janab Khan Abdul Wali Khan was the Head of the National Awami Party. He had a cordial relationship with Bangabandhu. He, along with his party members, secretly distributed posters and leaflets against the genocide and raised demand for the release of Bangabandhu. Although martial law was imposed in the country, he tried his best to issue public and press statements against the genocide, which reflected his courage and conviction. While living in Pakistan, he made effort to appeal to the conscious citizens of Pakistan to raise voice against genocide. During the Liberation War, the Pakhtun leader Janab Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, ignoring the instruction of Pakistan Military Junta, issued repeated statements against the genocide being committed in Bangladesh. The statements of this elderly politician exposed the true picture of Pakistan Government and created embarrassment for the Pakistan Government at home and abroad. He was persecuted by the Military Junta for his role and he had to face difficulties for expressing his honest opinion. Living in Afghanistan, he created public opinion in favour of Bangladesh and repeatedly appealed to the Government of Afghanistan to support the cause of Bangladesh. Lieutenant General Iwaichi Fujiwara Army Officer and Social Worker, Japan During the Liberation War, Lieutenant General Iwaichi Fujiwara provided valuable assistance to the Bangladeshi community living in Japan. He organized a group which raised funds for purchase of wireless equipments and relief materials and sent those to the Bangladesh Government. He provided assistance to the Bangladeshi diplomats who defected from the Pakistan Embassy in Japan in support of the Liberation War. Under the banner of a social organization called ‘Public Diplomacy Organization’, he organized seminars and meetings which helped create public opinion and moral support in favour of Bangladesh. Further, through this organization, repeated appeal was made to the Government of Japan to support the cause of Bangladesh. Dr Alfred Sommer MD, MHS Professor, USA

During the Liberation War, a scientist of the Cholera Research Laboratory in Dhaka, Dr Alfred Sommer MD, MHS, saved the lives of prominent Bangladeshi academics and politicians by giving them shelter in his house in Dhaka and assisted them by driving them to the safe rural areas. He also assisted those Bangladeshi academics and politicians to leave the country, who were planned to be assassinated by the Pakistan Army and their collaborators. He provided valuable information to Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury and other Bangladeshi leaders in London and a list of Bangladeshi intellectuals killed by the Pakistan Army and their collaborators. He was a fervent advocate for providing support to the refugees and took measures for control of a massive smallpox epidemic that followed the end of the war. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Dr Alfred Sommer MD, MHS is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.

Janab Maulana Syed Asad Madani Politician and Islamic Scholar, India

During the Liberation War, Janab Maulana Syed Asad Madani as a member of Indian Rajya Sabha and Central Secretary General of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, in the party convention held in Delhi on 27 April and in Calcutta on 18 August passed resolutions condemning the genocide in Bangladesh, expressing condemnation and appealed to people of India to do the same. On 16 July in Delhi and on 17 August in Panipat, his party organized massive rallies in favour of Bangladesh which was chaired by the Second-in-Command of Azad Hind Fauj, General Shahnewaz Khan. On 24 November, he appealed to the Rajya Sabha to support the Liberation War and on the same day led a huge procession demanding release of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He also sent representatives to the Muslim countries to create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. Cetin Ozbayrak Journalist and Social Worker, Turkey During the Liberation War, journalist and social worker of Turkey, Cetin Ozbayrak created public opinion against genocide committed by the Pakistan Military Junta through his newspaper articles and other writings. He also arranged and participated in various public meetings and seminars for raising public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Cetin Ozbayrak is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Lieutenant Colonel Kulwant Singh Pannu Maha Vir Chakra Commanding Officer of 2 Para Battalion, Indian Army During the Liberation War, Lieutenant Colonel Kulwant Singh Pannu was the commanding officer of 2 Para Battalion of Indian Army. The battalion was para dropped near Tangail on 11 December 1971 behind the enemy lines. In a critical situation, he captured enemy positions and repulsed counter-attacks which changed the course of war. The advance of his battalion towards Dhaka created panic among Pakistan Army commanders and shattered their morale. For his gallant and inspiring leadership, he was awarded Maha Vir Chakra by the Indian Government. Later he was promoted to the rank of Major General. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Lieutenant Colonel Kulwant Singh Pannu Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Kishore Parekh Journalist and Photographer, India During the Liberation War, Shri Kishore Parekh captured some of the most heart-wrenching photographs of the struggling people in the refugee camps. These photographs were widely circulated among the international communities, which helped create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. He accompanied the Mitra Bahini and photographed the campaign to Dhaka. He also took photographs of genocide conducted by Pakistan Army and the dead bodies of the martyred intellectuals in Rayerbazar killing ground. After the liberation, he published a photographic document titled ‘Bangladesh: Brutal Birth’ which is an outstanding documentation on the Liberation War. For his remarkable support and contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Shri Kishore Parekh is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Ashok Ray Former Government Official, India

During the early days of Liberation War, Shri Ashok Ray was the Joint Secretary in charge of Pakistan desk in the Ministry of External Affairs of India. In April, he was instructed by his Government to open a branch office of the Ministry of External Affairs in Calcutta. This was the liaison office for providing support and cooperation to Bangladesh Government. On behalf of the Indian Government, he maintained communication with the Bangladesh Government with regard to diplomacy and administration. He also kept close liaison with the headquarters of the Eastern Command and the Border Security Forces for providing training to the Freedom Fighters and assistance to the refugees. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Shri Ashok Ray is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Subhash Mukhopadhyay Poet and Cultural Activist, India

During the Liberation War, as the Deputy Secretary General of Afro-Asian Writers Forum, the famous poet Shri Subhash Mukhopadhyay, visited Vietnam and informed the people of the genocide committed in Bangladesh. He was able to obtain support for the cause of Liberation War. He also organized poets, writers and arranged for public meetings where he used to recite poems on the Liberation War. He played active role as a member of Bangladesh Shahayak Samity. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Shri Subhash Mukhopadhyay is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Samar Ranjan Sen Economist, India

During the Liberation War, Shri Samar Ranjan Sen was the Executive Director of the World Bank in Washington DC. With the funds collected from the friends of Bangladesh, he assisted in procurement of communication equipments for the Freedom Fighters and arranged to send them to Bangladesh. These were subsequently used by the Freedom Fighters. He took part in various seminars and symposiums where he strongly supported Bangladesh’s cause and raised voice against genocide. He also played a role in allocation of funds of the World Bank for helping the refugees. For his great contribution to the Liberation War, Shri Samar Ranjan Sen is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Samar Sen Diplomat, India During the Liberation War, Shri Samar Sen, an eminent diplomat, served as Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations. During the sessions of General Assembly and other meetings, he apprised the member-states of the United Nations of the genocide being committed by the Pakistan Army in Bangladesh. He played an active role in raising the demand for the release of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from Pakistani prison. When the Bangladesh delegation led by Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury arrived in the UN, he introduced them to the General Assembly participants and to the influential world leaders. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Shri Samar Sen is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shaheed Subedar Malkiat Singh Maha Vir Chakra 14 Punjab Regiment, Indian Army During the Liberation War, Subedar Malkiat Singh was commanding a platoon of 14 Punjab Regiment, which was in charge of a defended area near Garibpur of Jessore. Under intense enemy tank attack, he and his troops defended the position, inflicting heavy casualties on them. Subsequently, he became a martyr after being hit by a tank shell. The Indian Government awarded him Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery and leadership. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Shaheed Subedar Malkiat Singh Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Shri Sukhdev Singh Sandhu Film Director and Photographer, India During the Liberation War, Shri Sukhdev Singh Sandhu visited battle fields and started making documentaries on the Liberation War. His films reflected the human dimensions of the war and the participation of the common people in the liberation movement, which was made available to the international communities. In 1972, he released his documentary titled ‘Nine Months to Freedom: The Story of Bangladesh’. This documentary is considered one of the great artistic works on the Liberation War. For his remarkable support and contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Shri Sukhdev Singh Sandhu is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Lieutenant General Tapishwar Narain Raina Maha Vir Chakra, Padma Bhushan Commander II Corps, Indian Army During the Liberation War, Lieutenant General Tapishwar Narain Raina Maha Vir Chakra, Padma Bhushan was the Commander of II Corps of Indian Army whose forces successfully advanced from south-west Bangladesh. Within the shortest possible time, his forces captured Jessore, Khulna and surrounding areas by defeating the Pakistan Army. This paved the way for the ultimate defeat of Pakistan Army and their surrender. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Lieutenant General Tapishwar Narain Raina Maha Vir Chakra, Padma Bhushan is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).

Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Organization (AAPSO) Egypt During the Liberation War, the Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Organization (AAPSO) held its 5th Congress in Cairo. The Bangladesh delegation attended the conference as an observer. At that crucial time, the Congress, after prolonged debate, admitted Bangladesh as a member of AAPSO. The Bangladesh delegation informed the Congress of the acts of genocide committed by Pakistan Army and sought the assistance of AAPSO in their just struggle for freedom, which drew attention of the world press. This was a diplomatic victory for Bangladesh. For its great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Organization (AAPSO) is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.
