Students put 11 points for unity
Six student leaders representing three student organisations namely East Pakistan Students League and two groups of East Pakistan Students Union in a joint statement on Sunday called upon the opposition political parties to come forward for a mass struggle by forming a united platform on the basic of an eleven-point programme.
The signatories to the students which were circulated to the press by Vice-President Dacca University Central Students Union (DUCSU) regretted the absence of a united movement by the opposition even when the students and the public had come forward.
The signatories are: Saifuddin Manik and Shamsuddoha, President and General Secretary respectively, East Pakistan Students Union (Matia Group), Abdur Rauf and Khaled Mohammed Ali, President and General Secretary of East Pakistan Students League, Mostafa Kamal Haider and Nur Mohammad Khan, President and Publicity Secretary, respectively of East Pakistan Students Union (Menon Group).
The political demands incorporated in the 11 point programme suggested as the basis of unity include parliamentary democracy on the basis of universal adult franchise, full autonomy of East Pakistan and also autonomy for the northern provinces of West Pakistan, retaining with the Federal Government only three functions namely, defense, foreign policy and currency.
The 11 point programme propose to give East Pakistan power to form a militia or paramilitary force and also demands naval head quarters in this province.
Under the programme the Federal Government is not to have any power to levy any taxes and each federating state is to maintain separate accounts of foreign trade.
Demands for repeal of all repressive laws end of emergency release of all detains and withdrawal of all political cases are also made.
