Izvestia’s Appeal to India And Pakistan

MOSCOW, July, 11.–The Soviet Government newspaper Izvestia yesterday advised India and Pakistan in identical terms to make efforts to prevent a “further aggravation of the situation” in the Indian subcontinent, reports UNI.
In a commentary the paper stressed that preservation of peace in the Asian sub-continent “is the only correct road to meeting the national interests of the Indian and Pakistani peoples and the cause of universal peace.”
The commentator, Mr. V. Vasin asserted that any contrary “development of events would undoubtedly mean playing into the hands of those circles in India and Pakistan and also the forces beyond them that want to do damage to India and Pakistan while pursuing their definite political aims.”
Stating that these forces were acting vigorously. Mr. Vasin accused them of “using every possibility for intensifying tensions in that area in pursuance of their selfish interests.”
He added: “The Soviet people, just like all genuine friends of the people of India and Pakistan, express hope that all the necessary efforts will be exerted to prevent a further aggravation of the situation in the Asian sub-continent and that other counties will refrain from steps capable of leading to an undesirable development of events in the part of Southern Asia.”
The second part of Mr. vasin a statement was considered by observers as an implied appeal to the USA to stop arms supplies to Pakistan.
