Cabinet body discusses Thant’s suggestion
From Our Political Correspondent, NEW DELHI, July 27.-The Political affairs Committee of the Cabinet met today to discuss U Thant’s suggestion that Security Council members should meet informally to discuss the danger to peace in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent as a result of the developments in Bangladesh and the flow of millions of refugees into India.
The UN Secretary-General’s proposal is said to be that a formal meeting of Security Council may be held if the members thought it necessary after an informal discussion.
India has been surprised by U Thant’s move, particularly because he has been remaining practically silent all these four months of Gen. Yahya’s bloody terror in Bangladesh.
The Political Affairs Committee is opposed to a meeting of the Security Council to discuss the agenda as suggested by U Thant.
The Government’s view, which is expected to be communicated to the Security Council members, is that the real issue between the people of Bangladesh and the military junta in Islamabad.
