Wide support in UN to India’s stand : Singh

WNE, DELHI, Oct. 7.-India’s stand that a political solution acceptable to the already elected representatives of Bangladesh was the only way to ensure the return of the refugees to their homeland has received “wide support” in the United Nations General Assembly now in session, according to the External Affairs Minister. Mr. Swaran Singh, reports PTI.
Mr. Swaran Singh, who returned this morning from New York; said at the airport that Pakistan’s efforts to draw a curtain over the military atrocities perpetrated against the people of Bangladesh on the plea of domestic jurisdiction “had been rejected by the International community.”
Mr. Swaran Singh felt that it was significant that no country had so far endorsed the views of Pakistan.
Although several countries had preferred not to expressly mention the political aspect of the issue, projection of Pakistan’s case had not been endorsed by any delegation at the UN so far.
He said that the struggle in Bangladesh was increasingly being recognised in the UN as a matter between the military generals and the people of Bangladesh.
Pakistan was trying hard to project its continuing military actions and atrocities against the people of Bangladesh as a dispute between India and Pakistan. But the Pakistan delegation had so far failed to convince the world in its efforts in this regard.
Mr. Singh saw “an increasing awareness” among the nations that the problem in Bangladesh would not be solved unless the refugees returned to their homeland.
“From India’s point of view,” he said “it is satisfactory to note that the Big Four powers laid stress in the General Assembly on the desirability of working out a political solution in Bangladesh which might facilitate the return of the refugees to their homeland.”
