PROMINENT REFUGEES WILL DISCUSS PROSPECT OF
INDIAN-PAKISTAN WAR
The prospect of war between India and Pakistan and the refugee problem in India today, will be the subject of a special program presented by the India Association and the A. S. Lectures and Forums Commission.
Dr. Azizur Rahman Mallick and Dr. Ashabul Haq, East Pakistan refugees, will speak at noon in front of the bookstore and at 2.30 p.m. in the multi-media room 200.
Mallick was vice-chancellor of Chittagong University. He has specialized in the field of modern Indian history, serving as a lecturer and then professor of history at several Bengali universities since 1941.
As a member of several commissions and eventually chairman of the Inter-University of Pakistan and the standing committee of vice-chancellors, he has participated actively in developing the educational system of East Pakistan. He has also been a delegate to UNESCO conferences and was a member of the Pakistan delegation for the People’s Republic of China 1969. He is now president of the Bangladesh Teachers’ Association.
Haq has been a practicing physician since 1944, while also being active in Bengali politics. He joined the Awami League as founding member in 1949 and was president of the Kushtia District of the Awami League from 1961-66.
In 1970, he was elected to the Provincial Assembly of East Pakistan. He is presently chairman of the Bangladesh Red Cross.
On March 25, 1971 the armed forces of West Pakistan descended upon the University of Dhaka campus and opened fire on student dormitories. Approximately 500 students were killed.
All eminent professors, journalists, lawyers, and political leaders in the area were executed according to Haq and Mallick.

It is estimated that at least 40,000 people were killed that first night. By now it is estimated that up to one million people have been killed and nine million have fled to neighboring India.
Mallick and Haq will relate the refugee situation, history of the division of Pakistan as well as a plan for action on the part of the people of the United States.
The appearance of both men was arranged through the International Rescue Committee and the Student Committee for Bengal Refugee Day.
