Mujibur Rahman Resigns

By a Staff Reporter
The East Pakistan Minister for Commerce, Labour and Industries, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, tendered resignation of his office yesterday.
The resignation letter was handed over to the Chief Minister, Mr. Ataur Rahman Khan, following a discussion between them. The Chief Minister is reported to have asked Mr. Mujibur Rahman to continue to be in office till June 15.
Mr. Mujibur Rahman, who is the General Secretary of the East Pakistan Awami League, it might be recalled, had agreed to resign his post at the last Council session at Kagmari to devote himself to the organisational work of his party.
The Awami League circles, when contacted, said that the resignation of Mr. Mujibur Rahman was “very timely” as the Awami League Council session which is going to be held within a fortnight, was “fraught with danger” for the Ministry. Mr. Mujibur Rahman, it was said, would now make all-out efforts to bring about a rapprochement between the two groups in the Awami League which had fallen apart after the resignation of nine Awami League Working Committee members sometime ago.
The resignation of Mr. Mujibur Rahman is understood to have been approved by Prime Minister Suhrawardy, who wanted him to pay more attention towards reorganizing the party.
