Announcement Hailed in Dacca

The announcement of President Iskander Mirza calling upon the Awami League Chief, Mr. H. S. Suhrawardy, to form the new Government at the Centre was generally hailed in the political circles in Dacca yesterday. The news was welcomed in the Awami League circles which said that in the present context of things it was obvious and inevitable.
The East Pakistan Chief Minister, Mr. Ataur Rahman Khan said, “This was what the country was expecting since a long time.” He said, “This is the happiest day in the life of Pakistan, After 9 years of frustration, the country may see the dawn of prosperity and happiness.”
Mr. Mujibur Rahman, the East Pakistan Commerce, Labour and Industries Minister said, “It is not the personal victory of Mr. Suhrawardy nor the Awami League. It is the victory of the democratic forces of Pakistan and the people of Pakistan”. He added, “This is a first step of democracy. I believe Mr. Suhrawardy, our beloved leader will be able to establish democratic traditions in the country and Mr. Suhrawardy will be able to do something for the people of Pakistan. I hope the whole of Pakistan will stand behind Mr. Suhrawardy to establish democracy in Pakistan.” The East Pakistan Revenue Minister and leader of the 10-man Leftist Ganatantri Dal in the Provincial Assembly, Mr. Mahmud Ali, said in a statement that Mr. Suhrawardy would be in a position to form a stable Government and there would be a “substantial” change in the foreign policy of the country. The leader of the United Front Party, Mr. A. H. Sarkar, declined to make any statement in this connection.
The Congress leader, Mr. Basanta Kumar Das, reserved his opinion “at the present moment.” He, however, indicated satisfaction over the manner in which the President had upheld the Constitution by calling upon the leader of the Opposition to form the Government.
