Arrest of Student Leaders Protest by Awami Leaguers

Mr. Ataur Rahman Khan and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Vice-president and General Secretary of the East Pakistan Awami Muslim League, have in a joint statement protested against the sudden arrest of student leaders and Awami League workers in Dacca and Narayanganj They state that the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the province did not warrant such drastic action, and condemn the “high-handed repression” demanding immediate release of the arrested persons “It is a matter of deep regret.” says the statement that these respectable citizens are arrested and treated like ordinary prisoners without being given any class. We urge upon the Government to pass immediate orders to grade them as Class I prisoners till their release.
