$15.3m worth of US wheat, rice for Pindi
WASHINGTON, AUGUST 7 – The US will furnish Pakistan with $15.3 million (Rs11.48 crore) worth of wheat and rice under a new. Food for Peace agreement, the US Agriculture Department announced yesterday, report agencies.
The aid will include 100.000 metric tons of wheat or flour worth $6.3 million (Rs.4.72 crore) and 50.000 tons of rice worth $9 million dollars (Rs.6.75 crore).
Officials said the new aid is provided as a supplement to an earlier Food for Peace arrangement with Pakistan. It was signed in Islamabad.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General U Thant, reported yesterday that a working group has been established in Geneva to coordinate the total UN relief effort for East Bengal, reports Reuter. He said agreements were also being also being made to recruit 33 persons from various countries to staff the first phase of a new organisational plan.
“All expenses connected with the relief effort in East Bengal will be covered from voluntary contributions made in response to the SecretaryGeneral appeals” U Thant said in a statement.
He also announced that the Government of Malaysia has decided to contribute 40.000 Malaysian dollars to the fund.
U Thant will confer at the UN head quarters on Monday about the East Bengal situation with the US Secretary of State, Mr. Rogers.
The international charity organization OXFAM yesterday called on major world Government, to rush to the rescue of tens o thousands of Bangladesh refugees in India.
The first disaster, the arrival of seven million refugees and the cholera outbreak, had been largely coped with “an OXFAM spokesmen said.
But now he said thousands of the refugee children face starvation.
“There has never before been a relief demand of this immensity,” he said.
