Mujib Demands Release Of Detenus
The General Secretary of the East Pakistan Awami League, Mr. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on Friday demanded immediate release of political workers and MECs now under detention and restoration of an atmosphere congenial to the free excercise of the right to vote in the ensuing election to the National Assembly, reports PPA.
In a statement released to the Press Mr. Rahman expressed his concern at the reported arrests of prominent Opposition leaders of West pakistan namely, Colonel Abid Hossain and Nawabzada Iftekhar Ahmed Ansari, MPA, and a host of members of the Electoral College lending support to the Opposition candidates.
These arrests, the statement said, just on the eve of the election “Portend to the kind of fair and impartial election professed to be held by the ruling party.”
The Awami League leader alleged that the Government was applying coercion, intimidation and oppression” in order to win the election.
He further alleged that the officers of the lower strata of the administration had been “freely utilised” for the election campaign in support of the Muslim League nominees.
