From MAHBOOBUL ALAM
Dawn Dacca Correspondent
DACCA, Oct 6 : National Democratic Front leader H.S. Suhrawardy said here today that the consensus of opinion, in fact the vast majority of the people of Pakistan, were in favour of a “Democratic Constitution,” and it was for the President to devise ways and means to see that the country got such a Constitution.
Mr. Suhrawardy was talking to newsmen at the Tejgaon Airport on his arrival here from Karachi this evening.
Asked about what process he would adopt to achieve his objective, he said any process was posible. He added that he wanted to proceed constitutionally and hence should impress upon the President, that he should realise that the vast majority of the people were in favour of a “democratic constitution”.
“Is it necessary to explain to the world what is democratic Constitution”, asked Mr. Suhrawardy in reply to a correspondent who wanted to know what the former meant by democratisation of Constitution.
The former Prime Minister told another correspondent that there was no “minimum programme” before the National Front. It aimed at nothing else but the mobilisation of public opinion in favour of a democratic Consitution. “Public opinion here is suffficiently mobilised, we must now remain united”, he added.
He declined to comment on the reported restrictions imposed on Khan Abdul Qayyum Khan.
Mr. Suhrawardy is scheduled to address a public meeting here tomorrow. He may also address meetings elsewhere during his stay in the province.
Former Chief Ministers Ataur Rahman Khan and Abu Hosain Sarkar, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a host of other political leaders and workers were present to receive him.
APP adds: asked to comment on the release of Khan Abdul Qayyum Khan, Mr. Suhrawardy said: “What I have to do with Qayyum Khan? We wanted his release and he has been released.”
