CALCUTTA’S BENGALIS ORGANISING VOLUNTEERS TO AID MUJIB
CALCUTTA. Tues.
EFFORTS are being made in Calcutta to organise volunteers to cross the border into East Pakistan, to aid “liberation forces” in resisting the West Pakistan army.
Meanwhile, small groups of Indian youths from West Bengal were reported to have crossed into East Pakistan at the weekend carrying newspapers voicing support and offering to organise aid efforts on behalf of West Bengalis, many of whom have relatives among the East Bengalls in East Pakistan.
Medical students and political science students from Calcutta University said they were preparing to cross the border, situated about 60 miles east of Calcutta and serve as medics and nurses for East Pakistani resistance forces.
No Sanction
While there has been no official sanction for border crossing by volunteers, political leaders in Calcutta have voice unanimous support for the East Pakistanis in their bid for independence.
GENEVA : The International Committee of the Red Cross last night sent a planeload of medicine, blood plasma, bandages, tents and blankets to Karachi for use in East Pakistan.
Travelling with the relief supplies was Dr. Edwin Spirgi, a swiss, of the Red Cross. The plane is due in Karachi today.
