REAPING STORM 

 

Pakistan has gradually felt the heavy burden the East Pakistan crisis has put on her shoulders through the complete disregard of all notions of humaneness. Through the fault of her top leaders, the country is now facing economic and financial crisis the magnitude of which can be judged from the frantic calls for international help the Pakistan government is presently making. Pakistan has reaped a storm from the wind it has sown.

Now, at a time when Pakistan needs the urgent help from the international world, Pakistan is thinking again of democracy. The government promises to held elections if the situation in the country has returned to normalcy. How can the government expect to hold fair elections when nearly two million East Pakistanis have fled the country, not to speak of the thousands slaughtered by the army.

The Pakistan government is now begging on its knees to donor countries to help save her from total collapse. But the later certainly would ask guarantees that help from abroad would not be used to crack down fiercer on the East Pakistanis. The Pakistan government must give a guarantee that the demand of the East Pakistani people for political social, economic reforms must be filled, pertially if not wholly.

While the army’s grip on Yahya’s government is getting stronger daily. There is not much hope that the latter could give prospective donor countries a firm guarantee that democracy will prevail in Pakistan.

Through the government’s own folly, now 120 millions Pakistanis must bear the consequences. …
