Fervent reception for Gen. Aurora at Comilla
By A Staff Reporter, It was 12 in the noon when General Jagjit Singh Aurora landed in his helicopter at Comilla on Wednesday. With the Pakistani Army turning the tail the Bengalis ran for the airstrip to receive the General.
The General described his experience at Comilla to the World Press in Calcutta on Thursday. With dark eyes flashing check forward the (all and tanned General appeared overwhelmed by the affection and love shown to him by the Bangladesh people at the Comilla airstrip. He said: “At least a thousand people came running to the airfield, they embraced me, hugged me and lifted me up in the air with their eyes shining with tears of joy.”
General Aurora said he could see people coming in from across the fields. “But I could not wait any longer as I had to visit other sectors”. The General said he had already visited all the important sectors in his command. On Thursday morning he made a trip to Jessore, Magura and Jhenaida.
The General laughed aloud when a reference was made about the escape of his counterpart in Bangladesh, Lt. General Niazi. He said: “It does not behave like a General who had only yesterday retion from the Pakistani President to flee.” He added: “General Niazi should pull off his high decoration.”
The General had a word of praise for the Mukti Bahini. He said : “We are fighting shoulder to shoulder in Bangladesh.” The Bahini was supporting the Indian Army with information and already taking charge of the liberated areas. He said: “They are very useful for taking charge of the people and general policing.”
