Orphanage opened at Kalyani
“Khelaghar”, an orphanage for the evacuee children from East Bengal was inaugurated at Kalyani on Thursday by Mr. P. N. Luthra, Additional Secretary to the Government of India. Ministry of Rehabilitation, Branch Secretariat, Calcutta. The orphanage, which has capacity for 200 children, has already accommodated 21 orphanas.
Welcoming this new effort, Mr. Luthra said : “This is one of the 10 orphanages and unattached women’s homes, for the East Bengal evacuees , which have already been set up in different areas of West Bengal and Tripura.”
This orphanage at Kalyani is organized by Sm. Maitraya Devi of the Council for Promotion of Communal Harmony. Orphans between the ages of 6 to 12 are being collected from different camps and accommodated in four dormitories.
Sm. Sultana Zamen, a Lecturer of Psychology from Dacca University and her three daughters along with other evacuees, have taken up the job of looking after these helpless children. Sm. Zaman said that after one month of stay in this orphanage the children are looking much better and healthier as if after a long suffering they had come back to their mother’s lap.
