From Our Own Correspondent, HALDIBARI, AUG 20 – On Wednesday at about 9.30 p.m. Pakistani troops fired three inch mortars from a distance of only a mile on the Dewanganj evacuee camp where 12,000 evacuee are residing. At least five shells landed near the camp causing two deaths on the spot and injuries to several others. The injured persons have been brought to Haldibari Health Centre for treatment. It was raining throughout the night and sounds of exchanges of fire were heard along the Haldibari thana border between BSF men and Pakistani troops.
When on Thursday morning I accompanied the BDO and visited the camp area, many evacuees expressed their desire to shift to safe areas, as the camp is very near to the Bangladesh border.
