India-Bangladesh postal services established
From Gautam Gupta, JESSORE, DEC. 21-The postal link between Bangladesh and India, which was stopped on March 23. was formally established today.
In a function at the Jessore post office, postal bags of the two countries were exchanged by their respective representatives. An Indian Army officer handed over the Indian mail while the Postmaster of Jessore handed over the mail of the country. The Post Master said old Pakistani stamps and envelopes will continue for some time. But they are making envelopes and stamps with the “Bangladesh” markings.
With the communication facilities in a hopeless state postal service has not yet been possible to all the areas of Bangladesh. Even mail to Dacca will have to be sent via Agartala. For local delivery, services of runners are being utilized. But the PostMaster hoped that an air link would be established soon between the different areas of the country.
The largely attended ceremony was addressed by the Deputy Commissioner of Jessore, Mr. Waliul Islam.
