India claims share in aid meant for Pakistan
London, June 11.—The Indian Government would like to see a portion of the aid provided by the World Bank consortium for Pakistan diverted to India for the benefit of the five million Bangladesh refugees in India, says AP.
The India Aid Consortium is scheduled to meet in Paris on June 17. The Consortium which looks after Pakistan is in meet in the French capital in July.
Both groups probide international financial aid for the economic development of the two countries. An Indian High Commissioner psokesman said here the Indian Government feels that their share of aid to Pakistan should be diverted to India to help keep and feed the refugees.
Peter Cargill, special envoy of the World Bank, who will take part in these talks had made a special study of aid for Pakistan which is said to include up to $500 millions (Rs 375 crores) worth of emergency help. All of this is destined for Islamabad. But India feels that some of its should go to it to help the refugees.
Mr. Frank B Kellogg, special assistant to the US Secretary of State for Refugees Affairs and Chairman of the Interagency Committee on Pakistani refugee relief, will come to India on a five-day visit on June 21. adds PTI.
Mr. Kellogg has been briefed in Washington by US Ambassaror to India, Mr. Kenneth B. Keating on the refugee situation in India. Prior to his arrival here. Kr. Kellogg will consult in Geneva with United Nations High Commissioner for refugees. In New Delhi, he will meet Government officials and UN relief personnel. He will also visit Calcutta.
