Eastern Command GOC-in-C
Lt.-Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora, has taken over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, with effect from June 8, 1969. Prior to this, he was General Officer Commanding, a Corps, for two years.
Born on February 13, 1917, General Aurora hails from Jhelum (Punjab), now West Pakistan. He had his early education at Rawalpindi and was commissioned on January 30.1939 from the Indian Military Academy into the Punjab Regiment. He saw action in World War II in Malaya first as a Young Officer with the 7th Infantry Division. A paratrooper, he commanded the first Para Regiment (Punjab) after independence in Jammu and Kashmir during the operations.
In February, 1957 he was given command of a Brigade which he commanded for three years. He attended the first course at the National Defence College in 1960 and then became Brigadier-General Staff of a Corps he held that post till he was promoted a MajorGeneral on February 20. 1983 and took over command of a Division in NEFA. General Aurora was posted to Army Headquarters in November, 1964 as Director of Military Training. He was promoted Lieutenant-General in June, 1966 and appointed Deputy chief of the Army Staff. In April, 1967 he took over command of a Corps where he had already served as the BGS.
Having commanded a Division and a Corps in Eastern Command he is fully aware of the problems which confront this sector.
Found of reading and outdoor life, he is a keen golfer.
