The speaker of the East Pakistan Assembly, Mr. Abdul Hakim, against whom four no confidence motions have been tabled by the Awami coalition tabled by the Awami coalition party members, was described by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as “doing active politics”. The Leader of the House, and the Chief Minister, Mr. Ataur Rahman Khan, however, in a message to the first issue of the journal of the Provincial Assembly, “The Speaker”, had said, “Our Speaker, Mr. Abdul Hakim, will be remembered by future generations for upholding the prestige and dignity of the legislature. He has achieved independence of the Secretariat of the Provincial Assembly …. If the Legislature is supreme and sovereign, no undemocratic action can be perpetrated within our border with impunity even by persons who happen to be at the helm of administration.”
