Condemned by Ataur Rahman & Mujib
(By A Staff Reporter)

Mr. Ataur Rahman Khan and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, VicePresident and General Secretary of the Awami Muslim League in a joint statement have condemned the order of the Government of East Pakistan, banning all meetings and processions from February I onward. During the last two years, it is stated, a record of peace and order has been established to the amazement of the authorities and on these grounds the order was indefensible for the maintenance of law and order. “The occasion is a sacred one’, says the statement, referring to the “Martyr’s Day” on February 21, “and is observed with due solemnity and not for the expression of wrath or indignation, and as such the question of peace and order is wholly irrelevant, especially when the Muslim League Government which was responsible for the tragedy is no more in existence.” The statement accuses the Government to have issued the order only to outrage the feelings of the people, as well as to exhibit the powers of the bureaucracy.” The Government has been requested to carefully consider the situation and revise the decision.
