Call to contribute generously to Relief Fund opened by Mujib
Mr. A. H. M. Kamruzzaman, Convenor of the All-Pakistan Awami League, yesterday appealed to the countrymen to make generous contribution to the Relief Fund opened by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for helping the families of the victims of recent Government “atrocities”, reports PPI.
In a Press statement here yesterday, Mr. Kamruzzaman condemned the “atrocities of the forces” near the campus of Rajshahi University and the Rajshahi Government College leading to the killing of Dr. Zoha and a student Nurul Islam on February 18.
Giving his own account of the incident, Mr. Zaman said, It is my duty to bring to the notice of the nation the circumstances leading to the tragic death of Dr. Mohammad Shamsuzzoha Reader in Chemistry and Proctor, Rajshahi University. It was learnt that the students of the University wanted to take out a procession in two’s and three’s in the morning of February 18, 1969 as a mark of protest against the death of Sergeant Zahurul Haq an incident which sparked off angry demonstrations all over the country. As Section 144 was imposed the previous night on thana areas of Pabna and Boalia, the Vice Chancellor instructed Dr. Zoha and other of the University and dissuade the students from going on to Natore Road. Besides Dr. Zoha many other teachers, including the Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Provost of S. M. Hall were on duty at the main gate of the University at that time and they succeeded in persuading the students to stay inside the campus. There was no procession on the road, no sign of violence and no problems of security at that time near the University.
